Most of mine are 3-1/2 inches and tipped, like so.

A reliable source once told me that there are just a couple of Italian mills that make silk knits and that even all the venerable tie makers such as Charvet, Marinella, etc...contract out to these mills. Of course, they are made to their specifications regarding cut and color.
