The Rocky Hat?

What are the possibilities Hatco/Dobbs could make a fur version of their "Rocky" on a one off basis?

It seems Dobbs makes two wool Rocky hats.They've got Dobbs Rocky and Dobbs-The Rocky II.The Rocky is described as having a 4"crown height.The Rocky II has a taller crown height of 4 1/2.

Golden Gate makes a wool hat named Rocky.But it doesn't really look much like the hat from the movie.http://www.villagehatshop.com/golden-gate_rocky_low-rider.html

It would be wonderful Dobbs would make a fur felt version of their "Rocky".If not,is the fur felt Dobbs Glenwood the next closest thing?Is it the same shape and design as the wool Dobbs Rocky hat?

Hey all. New member here. Just wanted to see if anyone can help me identify the original fedora/trilby Stallone wore in the original Rocky movie and Rocky 2 and Rocky 5. I'm thinking its a vintage 60's or 70's Cavanagh brand hat. I've added the only pictures of the inside of the hat that I could see. The images are from Rocky 2 when e visits Adrian at the hospital for the first time. Can anyone identify the brand by the crest/shield in the hat? Any help is much appreciated.

It's not a Cavanagh crest or liner. I don't know anything beyond that.

Well if you believe Baron's, they made the hats for every movie ever produced. As Rocky was a sleeper hit put together in under a month, I would guess that the hat is a second hand find or stock from a wardrobe dept.

Thanks guys. Yea I thought maybe someone would recognize the crest. And yes, the liner ia definitely not a Cavanagh liner. Baron is made the hats for the last two movies but I'm not sure about the original hat.

Good guess. Sylvester Stallone has said he found both the hat and the leather jacket in a "hand-me-down" store in the neighborhood where they were filming.

It is most likley a wool hat but it is (at least what we would call it) whats called a rex hat. It doesnt look like a felt to me which is why i would make the assumption. You can get a new one fro about 35 bucks.

The original "Rocky" hat is definitely not a felt hat, as you can see in this publicity photo:

Cloth, possibly cotton? And it appears he wore the same hat in Rocky II; if it isn't, the wardrobe department sure did a good job of replicating the "wear and tear" on the brim and crown. He doesn't wear the hat again until Rocky V, and by then it's even more worn and torn around the edges of the crown. Otherwise it looks newer, so I'm fairly certain it's not the same hat. And in Rocky Balboa...

Just look for stingy-brimmed wool felt fedoras and you'll find plenty that resemble it. You should be able to find something like it in most hat stores. Here are some photographs to reference:

This thread is amazing.

I don't disagree, but I think it's even more amazing that an inexpensive hat that may or may not have been a thrift store find has generated such a fan base.

Between watching the Rocky movie marathon on BBC America Sunday night and finding this thread, I got curious about what might be available in the realm of "close enough" Rocky hats so for kicks and giggles I perused evilBay and found this:

Clearly not an exact match, but I don't look like Sylvester Stallone so... Made in China, 100% cotton, Navy Blue, and I'll be lucky if it even comes close to fitting my head (assuming it survives the trip), but for $3.59 (after using a coupon code) and free shipping I thought I'd take the chance.

I just placed the order yesterday and the shipping estimate they provided says it should take two to four weeks to make the trip from Yiwu, China, to southern California, but I'll definitely post photos of whatever I receive. I'm really not expecting much because there were/are a number of "red flags" associated with this. First, it's a cheaply made hat. Second, they apparently ship everything in shipping envelopes (including straw hats) so it may not survive the trip. Third, several "negative" reviews state their sizing is way off and their hats are too small regardless of the stated sizes (7-1/2 in my case). Fourth, I received a communication thanking me for my purchase, and all but begging me to contact them if I have any problems with the hat before I leave negative feedback.

Maybe I'm a sucker, but for that price I thought I'd roll the dice; it'll either be a waste of a few bucks, or it will temporarily become my new favorite hat.

Well, it finally arrived yesterday. Not what I was expecting, but in a good way. First, the red flags I mentioned above. It did indeed arrive in one of those plastic shipping envelopes, and I was expecting it to be crushed flat, but that wasn't the case:

Not only was it not crushed, but the package felt like a beach ball; I found out why as soon as I opened it:

Yep, they shipped it in a plastic bubble. Okay, so it's a plastic bag that they sealed and inflated, but it worked brilliantly. And here's the hat:

Yo, I ain't no Rocky Balboa, you know? But it fits! Actually it's a little loose, but I can easily live with that or place a little padding behind the fabric sweatband later if I want to. No liner, only a tag with the size and laundering instructions. And the pattern you see is a little more subdued in person.

The brim needs work. Despite the relatively severe upcurl in the back, the front was flat with a hint of downturn. I'll continue to work on it until I'm happy, but it'll do for now.

Not my usual style, but a heck of a hat for $3.59. I can have some fun with this one without worrying about something happening to it.

Yeah, me neither. There was a time not long ago when I thought I'd never be interested in a hat like this, but I guess my tastes are evolving because I'm really liking this one. At some point in the future I might get a slightly "better" version (i.e. wool or fur felt), but this will do for now.

Thanks Brent, I appreciate that. I think it depends on the hat because I've tried a few on in the past and they just looked all kinds of wrong on me; this was the first time I thought, "Hey, that's not half bad." I think the whole "Angles are attitudes" thing helps.
