Hi Folks:

I just learned that a neighboring town offers home milk (and dairy) delivery to my town.

I signed up and I'm thrilled:) They deliver it in the old fashioned glass bottles.

So, I was wondering.....

Does anyone else get a visit from the milkman?:)

We have milk delivery here in Sacramento, always have. They don't have the cute glass bottles though. I don't use it because it does cost more and I am on a budget.

Every day at home. Things are slow to change in rural Scotland. We haven't had a supermarket for that long. We EVEN have independent butchers/bakers/greengrocers. No candlestick makers, though. More's the pity.

Of course - is there any other way? ;)

Our milkman has usually been and gone between 5-6am although he runs a little late on Friday so does not get here until 7-7:30am.

This in Southern California would be some sort of tourist attraction novelty. lol

I haven't seen them around but then again I'm still looking for the paperboy on the street corner with his newsboy. ;)

Anyone who lives in California know if this still exists?

We have one in our area as well. I heard about it a few years ago but the prices are pretty high which is to be expected and they don't have gallon containers. Only half or quarts and they're not even in glass bottles.

We have that here in Canada too..i used to use it a few years back, and i stopped because my milk was getting stolen! Not in glass bottles however. That would be so cute, i would just have to do it.

We used to have a service that would come to your door & pick up your dry-cleaning ,too(that is probably not new to anyone that lives in real civilization)

Personally, i am all for any service that will come right to my door.

This topic made me do some checking on our milkman service and it looks like someone new owns the route.
They have alot more products and even glass bottles now. They give you an insulated box for the milk as well although I have a few from the 50's that shouls work.
I actually have one on our front porch just for the look that can actually be put in use now!
I may have to sign up.

Really? Milk delivery? Wow! Hope there's enough interest to keep them afloat. Out here all the online ordering for grocery delivery outfits went bye bye.

I loved grocery delivery, and if it still worked I would be using it today. Here Albertson's is supposed to do it, but my local store has a limit of 150 in groceries, certain brands only, no sale items and a $25 delivery fee to your driveway, you'd still have to meet them and pick it up. And you have to pay by credit card. (Compared to Alberston's 10$ fee for anything.) I need to hit the store for about 20 in groceries and I really don't want to get dressed to go out. I have dinner with friends, my hair is in curlers, I'm in my husband's old t-shirt, an apron I have no intention of getting out of, and my washing day skirt.

I have a kid that drinks 3-4 gallons of milk a week and even if they had it here, I don't think it would be a viable option. I DID used to have diaper service when he was little tho.

We go through far too much milk to have it delievered in 1 pint bottles! Plus it costs a fortune. It is pretty readily available in the UK though, milkman service. Bah.

I have 2 adolescent boys and we go through a sea of milk on a weekly basis. I see this as a reason TOO revisit home delivery, not shirk away from it. I have to either stop off for milk practically everyday anyway, or send someone out for it.If i have to run to the store to pick up milk everyday, you know i am NOT going homw with just a gallon of milk:rolleyes:

So, in the long run, i would probabaly SAVE money by having it delivered

eeeee! When I was a little girl we had a milkman, his name was Dave!:D

He'd come around in this tiny little 'fridge truck, and leave milk on the steps.
Of course we didn't get the funky bottles, we got cartons, but I still loved the milkman. He stopped when I was about six, and now if I want glass bottles I go to the really pricey Organic store for Goat's milk, I don't do that more than once in a blue moon, cause it just ain't the same without Dave:)

I am so jealous. I wish they would do that here.

oo the milkman

When I was little I was always so intrigued by the milkbox outside my neighbor's house across the street. I had only ever seen milkmen on tv and didn't know if they actually still had milk delivered or if it was just a decoration. Now that I have my own house I'm happy to know that I can get my milk and other products (such as bread, oj, pies, ice cream, yogurt, etc.) from that same dairy. Munroe Dairy's been around since 1881 and I LOVE the idea of getting fresh milk delivered to my house by a milk man in a milktruck thats covered in cow print! I'm going to sign up for deliveries right now.

memories

My first job was as a milkman, every friday night up at midnight, rain, winter whatever, and work until about 8. I did it from age 12 til I left school at 15. Being able to hold three pint bottles in the fingers of each hand was the standard to be achieved. Try it sometime running across wet lawns in the dark avoiding dogs and leftover toys.
