Here is the Montana that I received yesterday. I have steamed the brim down some, but more to go. Got rid of the feathers and put on a band that I already had, not sure about it. Undecided on recreasing. The color is closest to the outside photos.

Greetings DD et al:
That’s a great hat. Great brim and killer curl. Wonderful color. Much, much improved band. Looks sweet. With a crease that pretty i’d have to wear it for awhile and see. You can always DD it later!
Be well. Bowen
PS: I was thinking maybe Richard Petty and Burt Reynolds had something to do with the feather band fetish back then. B

Thought about bidding on this one for the "collection" (as it is too small), but let it pass. I don't recall seeing the steer horns on the sweat before (then again, there are lots of things I don't recall). Anyone here get it?

I have never seen the steer horns either. It has a diamond shaped O in resistol, on the liner tip, making it older. Mid fifties maybe?

BOY....I know what you mean about "for the collection" with that one......it is really a product of its time.....but wow....I really like the braided leather chin cord........wonder if it was an add on or sold like that? I know I have seen in the Miller Stockman cataloges many a womans hat with the cords factory and some men's hats too.

Ok, This is probably a case where a little information can get you in trouble.

I'm a newbie here and a newcomer to brimmed hats. I've worn flat caps all of my life, but ventured into a quality hat store in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico two months ago and walked out with two very nice Panama Hats.

I discovered the value of having an experienced hatter make suggestions matching hat to wearer.

The problem is, once I made the jump to brimmed hats it has fueled something of a passion in me to learn all I can about hats and hat making ... specifically Fedoras and classic men's felt hats. And once I get interested in something it's "Katy Bar the Doors!"

Now, I live in Texas. The Panama's will be nice in the summer, but I quickly recognized I was going to need a good durable hat for winter and rainy days.

Using the modern selection of Stetsons as a jumping off point and doing some reading here I realized I would probably get more bang for my buck if surfed a few local thrift shops to see if I could find a good quality vintage hat at a bargain.

So, today I struck out and visited 6 or 7 stores with varying degrees of success, but I found 3 or 4 very nice hats that I think are a very good bargain.

That's how my little bit of information came into play.

One store in particular had some nice finds.

As I was looking I could see a hat in the back of a lower shelf kinda hidden from easy view. As I reached in to get it, as soon as I touched it, I knew it was something special.

What I pulled out was this nearly immaculate Resistol Kitten Finish Beaver Fifteen. The feel of the felt was like nothing I ever felt before (no pun intended). Beyond that, it has a beautiful Cavanagh Edge.

The reason, I said a little information can get you in trouble, it ... I bought the darn thing even though it's not my size. I'm a 7 1/4 and I think it's a 7. When I got home, I did some quick searching and found a similar hat on ebay listed for $300. Now, I understand asking prices on ebay don't mean much, but it did indicate that the hat qualifies as a premium hat.

So I'm pretty pleased with my first purchase. To add icing on the cake, when I got home I noticed the tag inside said "with box." I called up the shop and they told me to come back for the box.

All in all, I think I was very lucky. It's a beautiful hat. I think it was hardly ever worn. The only signs of wear a some very minor edge problems to the leather sweat band and some minor fraying of the silk bow inside. Otherwise, there are no stains, damage or other signs of wear that I can see. Considering that it came with a box, I imagine it was never or at a minimum very rarely worn and spent it's entire existence in the box on the shelf in someone's closet.

Does anyone know how I can date this hat? My amateur intuition tells me it is probably early to mid 1950s, but maybe one of y'all might have better resources at your disposal.

The only sad part is it's too small for me. I initially considered stretching it, but realized if it's a 7 and I'm a 7 1/4 it's unlikely, even if it could stretch that much, that it will look right on me.

So, I might be open to a swap for a hat of the same/similar quality in my size.

I took these photos when I brought it home. He hat is very clean and fresh looking, very crisp, but would look even better with fresh brushing, and a little steam and shaping.

For other photos ... an Identical hat was posted in the Fedora Lounge by Fedoralover in 2009

Yeah, it's a nice hat, but size 7 can be hit or miss with prices. If that $300 hat you're seeing is from timothiescloset, forget about it. That's my size, and honestly most of my eBay hats have been under $100 (including a stupid good deal I got on a complete Stetson 100 with travel case).

It certainly looks pre Hatco, does it say Byer Rolnick on the liner? My guess is 60's (but I always say that).
