Need a little help

I have two black gold resistol hats... one has the oil well and the other is only stamped black gold

resistol told me before 1982 they did not stamp x’s into the black gold

I found another black gold, however I’m a at a crossroads. Seller says it’s a resistol “black gold” fedora.... I’ve never heard of one of those. It has the wide silk ribbon and bow and a bound edge. The seller says it’s stamped black gold and it’s a 20x however he did said the block tag is fairly illegible when I asked if it was still in the sweatband

mostly my size, it’s definitely a good price but I’m wary. I attached two images

Resistol stopped making dress hats in the mid-60s, and as I mentioned in Post New Hats, a post Byer-Rolnick dress fedora with a wide brim and wider ribbon is something I think I've not seen. It will be interesting to see the re-order tag when you get it. It's pretty much a given it's a HatCo product. I don't know what era the Black Golds were available, but it looks 70s to me. I'd say the odds of it being a conversion are high.

I believe you may be right about the conversion

I have a non x stamped black gold western hat and I asked resistol about the lack of
X’s. They mentioned my hat was pre 82 cause they didn’t x those till after 1981.

they are right, I bought mine in 1980 at Cutter Bills in Houston. My other is the one with x’s and oil well on the liner

so I am thinking it is a modified hat. And I know from experience that to trim, cut brim, add the edge, large ribbon and creased would be about 150.00 at aztex hats here in Scottsdale

mom paying 60.00 for it it may be worth it but we will see

thanks for the feedback

It's a nice looking hat, though.

You'd have to go back throughthe thread, but there is a date associated with when that stylized "O" was discontinued.

Michael, I have one just like yours. I think it is early fifties. Could be earlier with the unseeded sweat. The felt on mine is exceptional.

Thanks Jim. I looked through some of the thread and saw mention that they used it into the 50s, but nothing sharp for a cutoff. But there is a lot of thread I haven't looked at.

Great hat!
Thank you, sir.

Thanks for the info, DD. I opened out the sweat and all I found was these markings
IMG_9869 by Michael A2012, on Flickr
And this tag.
IMG_9871 by Michael A2012, on Flickr
So no union label should be 1958 or earlier and it's from the era of $10 hats. Not sure what the unreeded sweat would indicate, but outside of that I would feel comfortable with early to mid 50s. And yes, the felt is exceptionally nice. The hat weighs in at 122 grams, which is just 5 more than the similarly dimensioned Borsalino I got in the same buy.

Thanks all,
Michael

Tried editing through my app but image
Still is on it side sorry

Ok I got the Resistol and I like it. A little more than I’m used to paying for a hat (50.00) but it is a custom and a 20x but no block tag unfortunately, but it does have stamped “especially made for...”

so it is a custom fedora with the resistol Bronc rider on the liner ... this will be my third black gold

I know the image isn’t a resistol but I do reference this hat in the post

Thanks... I’m a 7 1/2 this is only 7 3/8 but it’s a long oval.... so it fits

I’m usually an open road hat shape kind of person not really fedora but I’ve bought three in the last month

penneys marathon, Stevens royalist, and this one! I think I may be getting older and that’s why... I like em. I did get a Borsalino Fedora “diamanté” a while back in amazing condition (1950’s I believe) but it was too small... however it was 4 bucks and it has a good yet not too hard firmness and really silky with longer hair than my cowboy hats

Not sure if the fedora look is for me or the OR look. These are both resistols but ones been trimmed and edged by aztex hats and the other image is the one I just picked up... I have a fat head so I’m not sure if it suits me?

I have no clue why my images are posting wonky to my posts? And to my profile image?

Ok I’m sorry I didn’t get back to posting the images of hat(s) as I promised for the request but here I am

I have three black gold 20x Resistols

1. my first I got in 1980. I recently mod’d it into a Gus crease with pencil curl and a wider ribbon

Inside it says black gold has a gold ring around the sweatband and the gold ring around the liner... it has no white ribbon threaded at back of sweatband

it came with a sterling Buckle hat band set (buckle, keeper, tip) stamped vogt on the back

2. Black gold Resistol, no images of tgst one... it’s still in Houston while I’m here in Phoenix. Bought in 1990 and has the x’s stamped, has the oil well on the liner and the white weaving of ribbon in back of sweatband

3. My third I just picked up and it is a custom. Black gold stamped on sweat band.... says 20x but no x’s stamped. Has the gold around the liner and on the sweatband. At the back it does have the white ribbon weaves into the sweatband

no block re order tag only the typical inked number stamped onto the sweatband

images follow of both mod’d black gold hats

I have to edit to fit and they aren’t in any particular order
