I wanted to want this jacket badly because it utilizes my favorite cuff type and a one-piece back with curved yoke. I had to go with the Steinbeck - it gets bonus points for the riveted 1930’s style Talon zipper with bell slider. As already posted, it is also a very versatile jacket which can go with jeans / boots just as easily as over business attire.

I’m counting the days…

Two black leather jackets in this price range is to much for me. I want one jacket, one jacket that I choose over any jacket.

One jacket? Blasphemy! You ain't going to find much support here for the "one jacket" school of thought. You don't walk into a crack house and ask for "just one hit."

IMHO, the J-22 is less versatile and harder to pull off well. That said, when well executed, it is super-cool -- arguably more so than the Steinbeck. Personally, I prefer the Steinbeck, and have owned one for a few years:

It actually is really nice. I like the handwarmers angle. Reminds me a bit of the Vanson Gambler...
But I'm out of the cross zip game...

LOL. I'd say this situation absolutely is a call for both but not either or. You simply can't get the versatility out of a cross zip that you can out of a regular half belt. For a single jacket the Steinbeck absolutely wins, but as SF alluded, having just one jacket is almost impossible, if not impractical.

I don't know about durability, but the hookless zipper on the Steinbeck is a giant pain in the a**. Love the jacket, but hate the (admittedly period correct) zipper. When ordering custom jackets, I stay clear of hookless zippers. I love the non-hookless NOS Talon, but the hookless are nasty.

It was tricky at first - but works just fine after a while.

However, a person without experience can easily break it.

A little bit of candle wax or Zipper-Ease has worked well for me. I'm hoping the Steinbeck cooperates as well as some of my other jackets. I have one with a riveted zipper that practically zips itself! When the insert pin is put into place, if I hold the jacket by the pull tab, gravity zips it almost all the way up!

I just had to put an end to this and have just placed an order. Finally!

It's a win win either way. If it don't fit, I have the Steinbeck and can let go of this beauty - and if it fits... Well. It fits.

This j-24 just popped up on eBay. I know the seller well. He's literally a 5 minute walk from my front door. I suddenly feel the cross zip side of the force is calling again.

Is that possible tho? Seems awfully small p2p. I've bought his stuff before. He's experienced and knowledgeable but that p2p seems like a 36".

I agree that 20.5 seems awfully small. My only experience with RMC is my J-100 in size 42 which fits like a size 40. I expected the J-24 to fit slim, but not that slim.

I've dealt with this seller before. He has been very cool about letting me try his wares for a day or two and then finishing up business. We are in the same hood, literally blocks apart, but I don't want to waste his time. I thought the 42" might come in around 23" p2p but I could be way off. I know RMC is a Japanese brand and they fit according to that pattern/aesthetic. Thing is, I know for cash in hand I could do far better than the eBay price...

I bet the measurements are as small as indicated. I have seen a number of listings for Japanese jackets where the p2p matches the chest size or is maybe a 1/2” larger. Frustrating, but it has also saved me from some very expensive purchases.
