Ok, I have one of the fine intricacies of these hats I’d like to discuss here. Not looking for the usual smart-alek answers (you know who you are), but actual helpful responses.

I have inspected three Stetson 3X beaver OR hats (actual, true “Open Road” as marked on the original sweatband) and found that the method of attaching the sweatband was different on those than it is on the four 7X “clear beaver” OR (again, true OR as marked on the sweatband) hats I’ve checked.

On the 3X, the sweatband stitches are clearly visible on the outside of the hat, under the grosgrain ribbon. They used white thread on the 3X I’ve seen.

On the 7X, the stitching is brown and is *not* visible on the outside of the hat. Also, the stitches appear to be much shorter than on my 3X hats.

So. In my quest to stitch in a good condition sweatband on my 7X, I want to install it the same way it was done originally. And clearly, the way it was done on the 3X (the way everyone kept telling me was the “right” way in my other thread about this) is not the same as they did on the 7X.

I don’t know if this has been discussed here before, but when searching previously to figure out how they installed them on the 7X, I did not see any differentiation between the method used on the 3X vs. the 7X.

Again, I am looking for valid and correct guidance on how to correctly replicate how this 7X sweatband was installed. If that makes you mad and you can't or won’t help, please feel free to not reply. I am tired of getting beat up on by people for simply asking for correct info.

To those handful of you that are actually helpful, thank you.

That looks like a skip stitch as opposd to a common loop or cross stitch. I use a curved needle. If you look closely you may see some of the original stitches peaking through on the outside as I have seen in the type or stitch. Ive tried it and found it difficult to keep the stitch completely under cover. The tighter the needle's curve radius, the shorter the stitch.

Thank goodness! An actual nice, intelligent, kind person with good information for a change! Thank you so much for your reply!

That makes sense to me. I’ve handled several 7X CB over the past several months and they all show this exact type of stitching as in the pics I posted above.

So with a tightly-curved needle, were they just able to stay within the felt so the stitches won’t show on the outside? On the ones I’ve seen, you cannot see any stitching on the outside at all. Many people on here told me I was full of it and just couldn’t see the stitches, but you can’t see something that isn’t there.

Thanks again for your kind, useful reply.

The same type stitch was used to secure the liner in days of old. I don't mind stitches on the outside, as they are always hidden by a properly attached band. The method you are describing is time consuming and not as durable, as it can be too shallow in placed and tear though the felt.

Yes, that makes sense too and you’re right in that it doesn’t seem to hold up very well as all these 7X hats’ sweatband stitches are loose. I just figured if they did it this way on the more expensive hats, there must have been some benefit to doing it that way. Apparently that isn’t the case.

Thank you again for your kind help.

I just joined the Open Road family with my Royal Deluxe in Silverbelly. The "problem" is, I can see it as a gateway to more Open Roads; now I'm considering one in Sage or Caribou, with Caribou in the lead for its handsome versatility. Does anyone know what page in this thread I can go to see a Caribou "in the wild?"

I'll probably end up with an OR in straw in a couple months too- 10X?

Does the hemp breathe pretty well? I can't say I've had a hemp hat before. I know palm leaf can be warmish, but I'd imagine hemp breathes more like cotton.
I have a hemp Stratoliner and love it. It's one of the most comfortable straws that I own, even in the hottest weather. I'll probably get a help OR before it gets hot here.

Hemp Strat here too......two in fact.....one in Natural and one in Sage.......love them both! I also have a really nice Hemp Whippet in brown which has the same proportions as the premier model felt.....
Great Summer hats!

So you like the hemp OR? I've been considering one since I've decided how much I like the brim up cattleman. I think I need one.

I do like it ... it wears well

I had to iron the brim down some because I’m not a fan of a deep flange on a brim up hat

... but it’s s keeper for sure

I enjoy it in the summer

Roger, I have one also. I also ironed the brim a bit. The only concern I have with mine, having a tall head it could have a little bit more depth in the crown to fit me better.

If it's the same as the Sage Stratoliner it's a great color. I liked so much I'm selling my Bluegrass Green Campdraft.

Thanks for the info guys!
