Mending cod net in Gloucester ca. 1905. The North Atlantic foul weather fisherman's hat is called a Sou'wester because a warm moist wind from the southwest brings a lot of rain. The brim is wider in the back than the front so water doesn't run down the back of your neck. The front brim can be folded up so water doesn't drop onto your face or folded down to keep the sun off. They were originally made from sail canvas painted with a mixture of linseed oil and wax called oilskin. The jacket and/or bib was the same material. Think of the guy on the front of a box of frozen fish sticks. Fish sticks were originally made of New England cod but they are now made from Alaskan pollock.
