November 6, 1860 – This was the last day that Valentine Taplry (Pictured) shaved. He promised his Pike County (Missouri) friends that if Lincoln were to be elected, he would never shave again. His beard grew to over
12 ½ feet.

His hat is on a table to his far right (really). :rolleyes:

I'm not sure if this has been shared here before, but I found an amazing online archive of photos by Lora Webb Nichols, a photographer who lived in a mining town called Encampment, Wyoming in the first half of the 20th century and left behind a remarkable record of life there.
