I'll Lock Up

Before embalming was common & still quite expensive they used "cooling boards" which were drilled full of holes to lay the body on. The boards were then placed on blocks of ice. I've seen later versions of cooling boards used in hospitals & medical schools. Imagine a large metal cookie sheet perforated with 1/4" size holes.
I grew up when folks would display the
dearly departed in the living room. But I didn’t
know this at the time.
One early evening going on an errand for
my grandma, I passed by a house with
the front door opened.
The only light from the house was yellow
glow of burning candles.
I must’ve been about 4 or 5. I couldn’t
see clearly (it was later when I started elementary & given an eye test that I
realized I needed eyeglasses)
Anyway... I got closer to see what it was.
I could hear soft wailing sounds.
When I got closer and realized what it was...
my “over-active-seen-too-many-monster-movies” mind kicked in.
I saw him opened his eyes and started
to come at me...
I screamed and took off so fast I swallowed my fresh “Bazooka”
bubble chewing gum and dropped the package I was carrying to my grandma.
I blocked out what happened afterwards.
From my days growing up in the “fabulous fifties”....
