My favorite kind of photos ever !!!Chapman's Department Store, Milwaukee. 1951.
Mike Miller at Northwest Hats in Eugene Oregon recently posted a great looking campaign hat style on his Facebook page.Yes; I'm a keen fedora wearer, but know little about westerns and military hats. I wouldn't have an issue doing a custom hat, but I'd have to find a hatter who does that kind of work. Major Mike is an obvious option.
I'd like to see what kind of hat goodies are in those display cases! My favorite kind of photos ever !!!
Interesting to see those Dobbs boxes in '51
I always thought they came a bit later ... very cool to see

Great photo & information guys. I don't recall ever seeing it published before. Right click...save!I think that is from some of the 1904 (Louisiana Purchase) Worlds Fair photos...
I've been trying to figure out what the chain is thru his lapel?
I do kind of get the Phoenix or Eagle now. All I was coming up with before was an iron stirrup. Thanks for the link to the article, I'll read it later.Jack, the more I go back and look, zooming in on it, the more it appears to be a ring with a bird mounted on it. Eagle perhaps. Kind of has that Phoenix look we often see on boots. Perhaps this offers a little insight.

Gone back several times looking at that as well, HJ.

I'll bet that's a neckerchief slide?
Don't know Cap, that could be a lapel pin. I was just thinking if this is a 1904 photo then he was ~75 yrs old, I think. And about 5 yrs before he died. I think he was in Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show for a time but I don't remember the yrs it ran. BB is probably correct in that this was taken during the World's Fair or during that same timeframe when Geronimo was on the reservation in Florida. That was the first thing I saw!! Haha
It looks like there is another trinket hanging above his button under his scarf....
Was it a custom to wear trinkets (like feathers and beads) hanging from there clothes during that time? Like after the Indians started wearing civilian clothes?

String?Another question, how did they make a ceiling fan chain??? Haha
