Yesterday, on my way into the local grocery wearing my dark brown '50s Royal Stetson, I got a "Nice hat, dude!" from a young guy sitting on a bench outside the store. I gave him a thumbs up and a "Thanks!"

Maybe a variation on this thread is in order. We all (I'm sure?) receive "nice hat" or "I like your hat" comments on a fairly consistant basis. Yesterday in the course of activities leading up to and following a wedding, I enjoyed six (6!) great hat comments within five hours.

Is there a record?

Well, after reading all of the above, I too should jump - in here.

From what has been noticed over the past eight months, I have come to The Conclusion that it is The Women who are more attuned to

someone wearing a hat rather than The Men. Having mentioned that, during my pre hat - wearing days it was only after "holding the door"

or "Ladies First" that a somewhat Knowing Smile would cross The Fair Sex's Visage; this also applying to older men. (Older than I, - 70 +.)

Now, with me just standing motionless on the street smoking, yes, I am One of Those, - A Dirty, No - Good, Low - Down, Run of Mill, Inconsiderate,

Smoker, I get The Look from The Ladies much more than previous, the men, not so much unless that man is wearing a hat himself and then there being

a sideward glance or a "Tip of The Hat" response. All that can be said here is The Women "Get - It", the men, not so much - unless . . .

This, I believe, Is not a Reminds Me of My Father or even Grand Father issue, it going beyond that. This is a This is A Man, This is A Someone, This is

A Thoughtful Person, This is A Person Who "Gets It", whether it be at on the street, at a banking line, at a restaurant, - anywhere there is an interaction,

and not always being on a personal Stop & Talk level.

Am I "reading too much" into this? After studying The Human Condition, I think not.

(And during the summer months whilst wearing a Panama, LOOK OUT!)
LOL.

Regards,

-30---I agree. Women are generally more concerned than men about their own looks and what they wear, so it could be that women are so used to men going out in public these days not caring about how they're dressed that when they see a man in a hat, it gets their attention. I notice a lot of double takes from women, fewer from men. When men look I think they're probably more interested in the hat itself, and are wondering if they could or should wear one.

hatsRme--Six in five hours! That may be the record!

Today while walking into the store, I was wearing my 1930s/40s Glen-Plaid suit and 30s Penn-Craft. A gentleman at the front looked me over, and said, "Man you are clean! You look like Clark Kent!"

Yesterday I had a flat tire and had it repaired at a tire place next to the Mall. Walking around the Mall a lady commented on my Hat and attire. I said thank you. Then I followed up with the following story:
"I have a crimminal background. I once faced a 5-10 for a Fashion Faux Pas, wearing a Seersucker after dusk. I hired the best Style Attourny in town and he got me off on a technicallity. The Fashion Police had failed to read me my Carmen Miranda Rights. "

We both got a big laugh out of it. She was grateful for the humor.

My daughter was married a couple years ago. All of the groomsmen wore really fine fedoras, that they bought for the occasion. Before the ceremony, I was hanging around with the guys and I put one on.

The best man said, "Dude, you could TOTALLY rock that!".

Not the best but unique

I was checking into a hotel the other day and the clerk exclaimed: "That's a great hat!". The thing is I wasn't actually wearing a hat at the time. She was looking at my drivers license photo which was taken with a vintage panama.

... As I sat down, an older woman told me it was nice to see a man wearing a gentleman's hat and not a cap. Another older woman spoke up to comment "And he took it off as he came in!"

Nana always said: "The proper gentleman never leaves the house without a hat. AND, HE TAKES IT OFF WHEN HE'S INDOORS!"

(Once said LOUDLY, after noticing all the guys wearing their trucker caps, in a restaurant, in Texas.)

"Hay Dick Tracy, I love your hat" May not sound like the nicest complement. But being it came from a very attractive woman and said in a very flirtatious/ seductive way, it rates fairly high on my list.

Now that, I can empathise with. Just come out of a specialist coffee shop, I love Kenyan Peaberry, ground for the french press, I'm wearing air force blue, 50's 'pegs.' If pegs are a term only used in the UK, they are a high waisted trouser, straight, but quite wide fitting with turn ups, (cuffs) with two tone blue & white brogues, a deep blue shirt with a huge chinese dragon motif, under a light blue & white pinstripe blazer, the shirt worn open neck, with the shirt collar over the blazer, all topped off with a matching blue & white pork pie, hat.
Two young women, no older than twenty, one said: "I love the way you dress." Whilst the other was taking pics of me on her phone.
They probably had a good laugh later, but it stroked my ego at the time.

Last Wednesday evening IldleDame and ClassyDame and I had dinner at the good old Oyster Bar in Grand Central Terminal, here in New York (the sort of unofficial hook up spot for out of town Loungers). Afterward I gave them a sort of half assed tour of the station and environs. We were standing on the corner of 42d and Park, across from the station's entrance, admiring the spectacular Chanen Building, when and elderly lady came by and told us how nice we all looked. Just out of the thousands of people passing by. It was very nice.

My wife and I went to a local steakhouse for dinner. We decided to sit on the patio since the weather was nice ( in Texas that meant it was only about 80 degrees. She was wearing her new wide brimmed sun hat she bought in Charleston on our recent visit. I was wearing my Stetson OR with a cattlemans crease and the brim down in front. I like it that way b/c it's unique.

The host who seated us commented that he liked my hat. I said "thanks." Then he said, "I saw some of those at Bass Pro Shops the other day. " I smiled and almost said, "Probably not," but my better angels reached me before I could be snarky. I thanked him for the compliment and enjoyed my steak.

A short while ago I was getting coffee at the Starbucks across the street from where I work. I walked up to the counter with the milk, sugar, etc. and stood next to a woman who immediately told me I was wearing a "gorgeous hat" (an Art Fawcett in granite felt). She asked me if I watched Mad Men. This prompted me to launch into a short explanation of how hat styles have changed over the last eighty years or so. When I told her my hat was custom made, she again said "What a gorgeous hat." All said in a very nice English accent. I'm a sucker for women with English accents, but one who appreciates a nice hat, too? Now that is special.

This is not a hat comment, it's a shoes comment. I had quite an evening last night. I had gotten reservations at the Cafe Carlyle, here in New York, for a show put together by an acquaintance, Will Friedwald, the jazz columnist at the Wall Street Journal. It's titled Tales From the Jazz Age: An F. Scott Fitzgerald Songbook. It was WONDERFUL.
But it was a 10:45 show, so I had a LOT of time to kill after I got off work at 5. So I posted in Facebook: Anybody have any suggestions how to kill a few hours on the east side of Manhattan this evening? Immediately I got a response from a friend saying check out "A Conversation With Edith Head" at the National Arts Club. You may remember the NAC as the swanky old club where Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Angelica Huston and Alan Alda conspired in Manhattan Murder Mystery.
I sent an email to them right away, and they replied saying that I was on the Standby List. Good enough.
I moseyed my way downtown, had a slice of pizza, got there about 7:45, and found quite a crowd. As I milled my way into the building, and stood at the sign in table, a very dapper gent standing there took a look at me, in my totally Cafe Carlyle-worthy outfit of Panama hat, blue blazer and white slacks, Palm Beach next tie, and, last but not least, nifty spectator shoes. He was wearing the type of spectators that have white on top and the brown that wraps around the toe (what are they called?). Anyway, he takes one look at my spectators and say, "Anyone wearing shoes like that deserves to be put into the seated list." So I was crossed off Standby, and put on the walk right in list. Turns out he's the Chairman of the Fashion Committee at the NAC, and co-host of the event. Soooo . . . to make along story short, my magic spectators strike again. (You may recall that at last year's Jazz Age Lawn Party, none other than Bill Cunningham took my picture and gave me the make a circle with thumb and forefinger gesture of approval. Didn't make it to the actual paper, tho. Whatever.)
Anyhow, those darn shoes get me more compliments than ANY garment I've ever owned. And I have them thanks to a heads up a couple years ago here at the Lounge. :)

The other day my son and I were on the sidewalk in front of my bank when a lady walks out the door and say's "Good morning gentlemen can I please get a picture of you two fine young men wearing those nice hats". Then she took out her cell phone and snapped a picture of us, thanked us, then she was on her way. My son commented about how we get compliments about our hats a lot. I told him it's nice to get positive remarks about ones dress.

jp: I took but one pic, of Bette Davis's famous off shoulder dress from All About Eve, and it didn't come out. But I have one nice pic of the interior of the Cafe Carlyle. It's a VERY small place. Holds only 80. From high end to low end, there is NO knee room in ANY New York cabaret!
