I guess we on the Lounge are mostly white guys. Around here in the Washington, D.C. area, you can count on the black guys to give reliable comments about hats. I get comments, all (that I've heard) positive. You know why I think that is? Because many black folks are attuned to style, like style, are aficionados of style. In the case of hats, more men wearing fedora type hats is more fun, it sort of creates new style niches to take advantage of. All men like hats. I also know from past experience that they'll also sometimes tell you if what you're wearing looks bad. I don't mean to make so much contrasting white with black guys, because we're really not that different, but I think generally white guys are less attuned to style, and can use corrections from anyone to refine it. So I'm happy to get any comments from other men, so that I can benefit from them.

It may be a cultural thing. I know in the old fashioned, small town community I come from it would be considered rude to criticize someone's appearance, and feeding vanity to pay a compliment.

I get compliments from Black folks on my hats and boots every day. it's been my experience that Black folks are more open to speaking to strangers than white folks in general about anything.

I used to go to a gym in the northeast, after five years I realized that I only regularly spoke to the same five guys; the only three Black guys who went to the gym, and two white guys who were from the south.

When I'm home in New Orleans anyone is liable to start up a conversation with anyone else at anytime.

We live in a very diverse country.

Black people give compliments on the hats because they know what they are. I work with about 3,000 or more black steel workers. I would bet if you would asked every one of them what a Dobbs was they could tell you. The white guys, not a clue. I have been selling hats to these people and making their jewelry for many years. The black hat buyer will buy one of every color and make sure he gets the most stylish hat band or belt to go with it. They know style and I have never seen one in the 37 years I have worked there dress like a slob. They are truly amazed that I wear the hats that I do. And if a little girl would ask me a question I would tell her the truth.

...Not sure about drenching a felt hat. Steam usually is the preferred method to shape a hat. Are those blotches of paint on your hat or is it the sun poking through the trees?

Upon running into each other at the washroom sink at a theater, a very young high school man just couldn't get over my vintage Stetson with the "real bow tie." He started talking to me and told me he planned to marry the girl he was on a date with that night. I think he looked up to me because of my style.

I was in Pittsburgh for most of last year, and noticed much the same thing - comments from the black gentlemen and nothing from the white. And I did my best to return compliments on hats; most of them went to black gentlemen because it was very rare to find a white gentleman wearing a hat.

It's well know that even after people in general stopped wearing hats in the 60's black men continued to wear hats which is why you got the comments you did, but I agree that I hardly ever see a white guy dressed up and wearing a hat .
As far as comments go I get them all the time and always good !

Yea I get alot of that too, the best one lately was when me and a buddy of mine were at church , and a woman after the service asked us if we were funeral directors and I stated " no but I work part time at a funeral home . " she replied really ?" and I said with a smile to convey that I was joking as I said to her ,"yea you look like about a 5 1/2 casket size " she then caught on and said " very funny " and walked away !

That's a good one :D It's only a shame they don't talk to you in most cases, so you have no choice but to keep going. At least one must be the well behaved.

Because a lot of people have a lot of mouth and not much brains or tact. They are like a ripped sack---they can't keep anything in. You might aws well use some good lines on them and make them go away thinking for once.
Tell them yes you are and they are lucky you left your gun in the other coat.
Tell them you are a legitimate business man since Gotti died.
Tell them no but you play one in the movies.

That one works. A friend of mine uses it all the time.
He tells people he is a mortician and they leave him alone. One of them was hilarious. The guy said he didn't want to see him this soon in his life and left---fast. lol lol
