Cool.

I drove the entire length of Route 66 in 1992, as part of a four-month, 48-state, 22,000-mile road trip. I have a Rt. 66 tattoo, too.

Whew! What a ride!
There are a group of state by state Rout 66 Associations, dedicated to the preservation of old Route 66.

The old US Route system was created a long time ago to have a nation wide road system, before the Interstate Highway Systen was created. They went through towns, and were almost excussively two lane roads. There are plenty of them left, at least on paper. One of them that I'd like to cross the country on is Route 20. It starts in Massachusetts (I think), wends its way across New York State, through the upper midwest, and ultimately to Oregon.
Here's its association. http://www.historicus20.com/
