The Most Interesting Man in the World

My bad luck. Living overseas, I had never even heard of "the most interesting man in the world" (TMIMITW) until Dos Equis decided to cancel the string of commercials. A friend of mine made an off-hand comment about wanting to be like TMIMITW and I said "who?"

Now, I confess, that I have sort of been binge watching the ads on the internet. They are funny and good natured and ---big admission--- the fact that its an older guy with grey hair gives me a sense of hope. Now when I look in the mirror I no longer see an old Elmer Fudd who is hopelessly behind on the latest technology and has no idea who Kanye West is. Instead I see a potentially interesting guy with a potentially fake suave accent.

Am I alone in this? Is anyone else going to miss TMIMITW? (I hardly knew him!) It also sounds like the actor who played him, Jonathan Goldsmith, has had a fairly interesting life in his own right. I'm running on too long. Anyone share my appreciation (if not my motives)? Any favorite lines/scenes that I may have missed? I'm still looking for the one-stop-shop where I can watch them all in order. Any little known facts about TMIMITW? Can you relate to the character? Or perhaps ---for those who have had to put up with him for several years--- his end is long overdue. (If so, forgive me. He's still new to me.) At any rate, I hear the campaign was quite successful for Dos Equis.

My wife said the next Ad series should feature "The Most Interesting Woman in the World" I'm all for it. Who would be the most likely actress?

Stay thirsty, my friends.

I go out of my way not to watch ads - I always mute or fast-forward whenever possible - so I can't say I have any affection for this campaign. Keeping up with SHOWS is hard enough nowadays without having to pay attention to the ads too!

The spots had a delightful sort of poker-faced humor to them. You can find compilations of the spots on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dos+equis+most+interesting+man

("If he were to mail a letter without postage . . . it would still get there.")

As for "Most Interesting Woman," I dunno. Anybody I can think of right now is a Name, and part of the fun of the TMIMITW campaign was that Goldsmith was not a Name and not instantly recognizable.

I personally never cared much for them, (sorry James, where ever you are!) Having said that, I sincerely hope Jonathan Goldsmith, the star, made out good. Same with Stephanie Courtney, AKA Flo!

One of the few commercials, in a series or no, that I actually enjoy. Same with Flo of Progressive, and just about the entire Geico campaign, including the original star, Mr. Gecko.

The original Mr. Gecko perished at the paws of a cat on an outdoor veranda shortly after the campaign began, and replaced with another. Kinda like Paul McCartney.

(Kelsey Grammar was the original voice, but replaced with the english accented voice they use now)

These are my favorite commercials in the world, and I'm bummed that they are discontinuing them. I normally hate commercials, but I love these.
I've read (and the article linked to in the first post states this) they're not discontinuing the commercials, but are replacing Goldsmith with another actor. That will possibly change the overall "tone" of the ads, but I suppose we'll find out eventually.

The REAL "Most interesting man in the world"??

First of all, Aoki was the descendant of Samurai warriors, and before emigrating from Tokyo to the United States he was the bassist in a rock band as well as a champion wrestler, qualifying for the 1960 Olympics in Rome. After attending college on a wrestling scholarship, he moved to New York to continue his wrestling career, winning national flyweight titles in 1962, 1963, and 1964.

During this time, Aoki also studied restaurant management in grad school while working seven days a week as an ice cream truck driver in Harlem. He was able to save up $10,000, enough to get the ball rolling on opening the first Benihana in 1964. And all this before the age of 26.

I'm sure there are other candidates, but it certainly is a good story.

Some of my favourites of these involve the very simple "TMIMITW on [insert subject here]". Particularly those where his "take" is merely the word "no", or even better, the shake of the head.

In a close second, those where the response is "I have no idea what that is" (e.g. TMIMITW on "manscaping").
