This may be the nicest Mallory I have owned.
The early 1940's was a great time for Mallory it appears.
Wonderful felt on this one.

That's gorgeous, 40. Love the color. Congrats on a great pick up.

Incidentally, I just checked and my Dallas (post-Stetson) has a Depth of "R."

The open crown spec on it is almost 6" (could be 5 7/8"). If that is any help.

I just went through this entire thread... found a few other "Dallas" beauties. Two of them ( both Buler's) have the depth indicated. One was an "H" the other was blank. Along with your "R' and my " J" , I have no idea what the " Depth" refers to.
I think the open crown height on this one is close to 6" also. I creased it pretty deep and it still looks high!
