New life for an old Mallory.

I bought this 1960s NOS Mallory straw uniform hat from a seller claiming it was black – it wasn’t (and you’d think I’d know better by now). Turned out to be a grey/green color, but too much of a hassle to return so I went forward with my original conversion plan. The crown (about 5”) and brim (about 3”) were hard as a rock, so I soaked the hat in water – that helped the crown, but not the brim. I was actually able to open up the crown before using steam, but the brim was still stiff. The crown was easily worked into a teardrop crease, but it took a look of stream and work to carefully snap the front of the brim down. Sorry for the poor photos, but below is the end result. I am happy with the result – but where am I going to wear a green straw??

An interesting tombstone mark with "Premiere" and "The Hat of Youthful Smartness". Don't believe I've seen this before. As near as I can figure out from old ads, the quality designations at that time were Aristocrat and Gold Medal both pricing about the same ($7) and then Premiere at the higher, $10 level. It seems that most of the Mallory Ten hats I've seen with a quality designation are at the Premiere quality level. Still need to do more investigation to really nail down the quality levels used.

That hat color is a nice natural organic dark color. I think it will look great with most shades of browns. Your rework is so well done.

As a Historian and research freak, I try to do due diligence (reading hundreds of Mallory posts) before posting my question. I recently picked up a Mallory "Eagle" off Ebay. The knowledge on the Lounge seems to date this model in the early sixties. There is no mention of Stetson anywhere on the hat which backdates it from the mid 60s. It has a number of features that speak to this, black sweat, 2" brim, and a 4 3/4" crown. The monkey wrench in this dating scenario is the store logo imprint on the sweat. This hat is from Hot Springs N.M. now Truth or Consequences, NM., The Barnes Dept. Store does not exist anymore. The city changed its name in March 1950 after a challenge from the popular TV game show. They broadcasted from the NM town the next day...

If this hat is indeed early 1960s, I wonder how long Hot Springs NM kept touting it's name change from 1950. Ten years of using both city names and "now" seems to be a long time. I dunno, did Mallory use the "Eagle" model name earlier, say - mid 50s? The price tag is $11.95. I like hats that tell some kind of historical story and this one sure does!

I think the store information gives you a great point in dating the hat. As I am far from the hat expert, using information from a store logo has always been my date point on hats or clothing. I purchased a sharkskin suit for my Husband that was from a mens store in Sparks/Reno Nevada...it burned to the ground in the 1950's so that gave me a date for knowing the vintage suit was at least that old. In fact the history of the story of that part of town involved the mens store to some degree...

We had one old Dobbs hat from a closed down mens store in Nebraska...it had a folded up newspaper behind the leather sweatband..had some articles in the news paper about the "new super chief" train that was to come into service...it helped to figure some of the dating of the hat, as there were no reorder tags to be found.
