THE MALLORY MILE

Very nice XV... from earlier knowledge in this thread, the combination of the 1817 and 1823 marks probably indicates a hat produced shortly after the Stetson transition.

Alan - That's interesting about the combination of 1817 and 1823. The Liner says "Renouned since 1817" and the sweatband says "Established 1823." So what's the story behind the two date and why did this trend start after Mallory was bought out by Stetson? I still believe the hat to be from the mid 40s. Not sure what year Mallory became part of Stetson! So would you say the Mallory Ten I have for sale is a pre-Stetson Mallory?

Mallory Fifteen Pliafelt

Mallory XV Pliafelt: 2" brim with overwelt edge; 5 1/4" crown (5 3/4 Open); 1 3/4" grosgrain ribbon with wind trolley. Liner use to have a oilskin protective cover. I found this to be an interesting hat with an unusual color. The brim is a slightly different shade then the crown! I believe the hat is from the 40s but it almost looks like it could be from the 30s. Any speculations regarding when the hat was made? I have come across some old Mallory hat ads from the 30s featuring hats made of Pliafelt. Not sure when Mallory first introduced Pliafelt hats.

Purplesage, your hat was probably made right around the transition time of Stetson buying Mallory. The buyout was August of 1946. Our assumption is that Stetson decided 1823 just wasn't old enough, so they decided to have Mallory go back to 1817. We have seen many hats with a mix of the pre-Stetson cloth, angle cut, size tags and the 1817 liners. Again, we are assuming that they were using up the Mallory cloth size tags but had transitioned to the 1817 Stetson liners.

That's very interesting Buler. Where did they get the 1817 date from when Mallory was in the planning stages! Besides the conflicting dates on a hat as mentioned what are some sure things that a Mallory is a Pre-Stetson since Stetson apparently was using old Mallory materials such as the liners and cloth size tags? Also, Pliafelt was developed by Mallory and I've seen it in old Mallory hat ads going back to at least the 30s. I've also seen it on Stetson era Mallorys in the 50s. Did Stetson get the copyright to Pliafelt when is acquired Mallory and did Stetson use Pliafelt on any Stetson hats? I don't believe I've seen a Stetson that was made of Pliafelt.

Actually, if you do a google books search on Ezra Mallory you'll find the date of 1813 mentioned as the year he started making hats in Great Plain near Danbury. Maybe Stetson marketing thought 13 was unlucky and 1817 sounded better? Who knows. But the 1823 date seems to be the accepted date as to when the "Mallory Hat Company" was started under that name. Mallory itself seemed perfectly happy with using "Established 1823", but I guess Stetson wanted the company to sound even older. As far as pliafelt goes, I haven't researched it much. You can check the Mallory Madness thread -> Mallory mADness where I tried to compile a chronological list of all Mallory ads I could find.

Mallory Dallas

I have this for sale in the classifieds but I thought it was fitting to add to this thread for comparison purposes if anyone else owns a Dallas which is an Open Road style hat. The hat is a size 7 1/8 and features a 2 1/2" brim; 4 1/2" crown as shown (5" open). The satin liner had an oilskin protective cover as I found a few flakes of the old cover in the hat. I think the hat is from the 40s but maybe someone out there could pin down a date.

Mallory Ten

No indication that this 1940s Mallory has ever been worn. Cusp of the transfer to Stetson - the box (which I think to be original to the hat) has no markings on it other than the "M" cutout. Underwelt brim with decorative radial stitching. 2 3/4" brim. At front, inkless embossment reads "Protecto Soil Proof - Mallory. Last photos show the color most accurately. From Ray Miller, Pueblo, Colo... Brad's home base.

**note - high winds today - it appears our web server is down. Photos will load when fixed.

Thanks for adding this hat Alan. Great color combo. I also love the staggered triple stitching.

Maybe purplesage will fix his pics....
