Ahh... chapatis, the Punjabi choice. The Man's rice.
Wife made some the other night. I have yet to get them perfect.
Daal, sabji and chapati- that's cheap food.

Last nite's rice? Tonite's fried rice. Excellent.

Anyway Smithy- where do get all this Garam char and barra peg talk from

I would guess that the microwave oven has done wonders for left-over consumption. At least it has in my house. Lunch on weekends seems to always be leftovers from dinners the previous week.

Many foods are better after the 2nd or 3rd day. Soups are ALWAYS better the 2nd day!

Lasagna is perfect the day after!

We always had leftovers growing up on the farm. In fact, one night a week was leftover night where Mom would take all the leftovers out of the fridge and we'd fix up whatever we wanted and pop our plate it in the microwave.

Since I don't like to cook a lot (thank goodness hubby does), I love having leftovers. A quick meal is the best for me nowadays.

Some of my family on my Mum's side lived in India BT and stuff has been passed down, especially a love of Indian food. One of my great aunts used to boom out gurram char when she brought the tea in, and always needed a burra peg around 5ish.

EDIT: Just remembered, homemade Irish Stew is fantastic reheated the next day.

Well, evidently you and I and all of the others on here are freaks of nature because I've always planned meals ahead and finished my leftovers.

When I'm at the store, I make sure that anything I buy is filling and easily eaten leftover.

So, in practice, I have beef&noodles Monday night and beef&noodles for lunch Tuesday. No waste and always tasty.

I do find it rather pathetic when friends of my complain about the high cost of living and in the same breath, tell me how often they order pizza, eat expensive pre-packaged meals and eat out.

I love a curry made with left over roast lamb or beef, awesome stuff!

And my Mum used to make bubble and squeak as well which I love ;)

"Bubble and Squeak" lol What's the story behind that name?
I only cook 3 days a week and eat leftover the rest of the week.
Todays Monday I make a large pizza eat a 1/3 of eat and eat the rest Wed and Friday. I have the leftovers from Sunday on Tuesday.
Bob.

Wouldn't have a clue Bob! I love the stuff though. I whack it up occasionally for breakfast but it's not nearly as good as the one my Mum made. Talking of funny names but not left overs, my Mum used to do steamed puddings as well which were always popular - Boiled Baby and Spotted Dog!

I once read this: What is the most expensive food? The food you throw away.

We can't afford not to eat leftovers. Unfortunately sometimes things will migrate to the back of the 'fridge and have to be thrown out as they turn into 'science experiments'. Leftovers are a way of life here.

ps I love curry too but the kind I would get in Japan. :)

I don't want to sound like a stuck record will all my talk of curry (but it's one of my favourite foods) but it always tastes better reheated. I sometimes make a curry and don't eat it till the next day. Although that's usually contingent on my being able to have the willpower not to eat it!

Any spicy food (Indian, Chinese, Mexican) tastes better reheated. No one can accuse me of wasting food; leftovers are a part of this contract worker's balanced diet. Hey, it's one less meal I have to buy at the supermarket.

My parents are also good about saving leftover food. They usually don't eat most of it, however; they leave that task to me and my sisters.

Does anyone else ask for a "doggy bag" when they can't finish their meals in a restaurant? We do, but always feel a bit embarrassed when we do, as it seems so out-of-the-ordinary!

I always ask my customers if they would like their food wrapped. And I always ask for mine wrapped when I'm out! :)

Whenever we go places, they ask us if we want it wrapped up. I always take it home unless it's something with cooked veggies in it (like Chinese food), as that just doesn't reheat well!

I do not think it is uncommon nor should anyone feel embarrassed about taking their leftovers. Taking someone else's is another story..

I agree it's not at all common here. Much more common in the US where the portion sizes are much bigger. I don't think I've ever asked for a doggy bag as I rarely don't finish a meal out, whereas on my last holiday to CA I rarely *did* finish one!

We eat leftovers. And about once a week I scramble 5-6 eggs with 2 types of cheese and all the leftovers- any vegtables, beans or bits of meat.[huh]

That's a good idea. I make a lot of casseroles, so I don't think it would work with them, but the times we have separate meat and veggies, I'll remember this. :)

Dang, I didn't know we had bigger portions in the US. I guess I'd starve to death if I went overseas. When I go to an "all you can eat" buffet, the owners will call their lawyers and begin bankruptcy proceedings. :D

Give me a good 20 oz steak and a pitcher of beer - then we can start the main course.

The times I've been to Europe, I've never really needed to take home leftovers--portion sizes were just right, not the huge two-meal plates we get served here. I love the leftovers from restaurants the next day, a nice break from my ham, swiss and butter sandwiches (or egg mayo, which I'm told is a really weird and unnatural love, but that is another topic entirely!). I like hot meals anyway, and having leftovers from dinner the night before is perfect for me. I don't understand not eating them!

Well, it's very unusual in France to ask for a doggy bag... I think that people are affraid to be considered as tightwad/scrooge persons lol... When I was in the US this summer I had the biggest pizza, I couldn't finish it, so I asked for a doggy bag!! I felt really ashamed at first, but the waitress told me that it's totally common to ask for that!! I love to make pasta with leftovers lol!!
