The Look

What is THE classic look. Is it a wide brim, tall crown, vintage fedora hat with a double brested suit, a pinpoint shirt and cuff links? Or is it a small, stingy brim fedora with a 2 button suit and a skinny tie? Does the classic look always contain a pocket square or fedora? Do you always have to have a suit on to remain looking classic? Or can you wear a pair of jeans a casual polo with a fedora and still be classic? Do you have to be a certain age or have a certain personality or look on your face to be classic like every 1940's actor or dresser? Opinions? Comments?

I tend to align with your 1st description but that's just me. And I think that is the wonder of it all. Each person has a picture in the mind of what THEY each think the classic look is.

Remember, we have all been conditioned by the cinema. In reality lots of guys wore assorted fedoras with all kinds of other clothing besides suits. In fact there was more wear of them with less dressy clothes than only with suits as photos of the era have shown.

Would Bogart still look classy in jeans and a long sleeve casual shirt with flap pockets? Absolutely!:fedora:

Yes, you have to be 31.5 years old to wear a striped tie and a fedora... :eusa_doh:

This is the silliest thread I've read here yet. Sorry JJ.

You can wear a fedora any way you want, you only have to feel comfortable with, I start at 19, since then never leave home without one of my lids, personally like to wear hats with shirts or suits, don't like short brims and low crowns, my favorite style are those from the 40's and early 50's. You can made it as classic as you want, the simple fact of using a Fedora it's classic by itself.

This is a photo of my grandfather from 1936 Athens Alabama.
I think he looks pretty CLASSIC to me.
I believe this is what the average man looked like at that time.

Fortino37 that hat in your 1st photo really looks great on you. The homberg is a fancy hat and looks good but the ''regular'' style fedora just cant be beat..

I was going to search for my idea of the classic look when I saw your gradfather's photo. No need to search anymore; you hit the nail on the head. Open collar, rolled up sleeves, button suspenders, and a fedora are the perfect working man's combination. This is exactly what I was wearing today (like most days). I confess I even sometimes wear a belt with the suspenders just like your granddad.

Now, on those ocassions when I have to wear a suit and fedora, well that's the other classic look. Then again, here in Japan, the classic look was a fedora with a kimono during the Taisho era (early 1900's).

Another one just for fun.

Thanks for the kind words, Russ
Here is another photo of my Grand dad taken in 1928.
Notice the jacket, bow tie and of course the fedora ... all worn with overalls.
I am really proud to have this 'fedora' pic of my grand dad.
Hope you all enjoy it also.
