There are so many things I love about early 20th Century, in particular the libraries: desks, bookcases, fountain pens, lamps, etc. I know the pen thread has had a bit of a run, but I would be interested to see photos of your vintage library items: desks, bookcases, lamps, and anything else related. Or perhaps, some of you know some links to websites devoted to such interests?

Yes! I'd love to see what others have in their library. I, as of yet, do not own a house large enough to accomodate a library, so my books are tucked into shelves all over the house. And by tucked I mean stacked two deep, crammed to overflowing, piled on the floor...

Some believe that if you go to heaven it will be like some ideal place that may only exist in your mind. I like to think that I will go to heaven, and that it might look something like this!

Very nice library there. I'd want mine to be cavernous though, an overwhelming amount of books that no one could ever read in a lifetime.

Although I love the art deco look to this room, I think my ideal library would tend more towards an English gentleman's library. If I remember right, Carebear, I think the library you're thinking of is what I would like, too. All mahogony, wrought iron railings along the upper floor, rolling ladder around the lower level, overstuffed burgundy leather furniture, fireplace,... Oh, and a full bar, of course. Can't enjoy Faulkner without a glass of whiskey, after all!

As much as I love the traditional library with its fancy wood, nice desk, fireplace, comfortable chairs and those sweet ladders connected to the bookshelves, with all my books it would probably end up looking like the mind of that Jonesy guy in Dreamcatcher-

They're all beautiful in their own way.

Heaven! I see heaven! My favorite would have to be the Stiftsbibliothek, St. Gallen...no! wait! the Handelingenkamer Tweede Kamer Der Staten-Generaal Den Haag. Deifnately. Or the Trinity College Library, Dublin. Arrgh! So many libraries, so little time!

BTW, Barry, at which library do you work? I didn't realize you were a librarian. Very cool.

My ideal library (and home) is the Pierpont Morgan on Fifth Avenue in New York. There are more beautiful, more luxurious libraries sprinkled around the world but, it's location and it's elegance have made this one of my first stops whenever I get home to NYC.

I am actually very fond of my school library. The architecture of most of the school is quite beautiful, and the library is one of my favorite buildings:

Of course despite the fact that a scene from a notorious pornographic movie was filmed there (without consent!).

My living room is my library. The bookshelves are now stuffed with books (this was taken just after I built the bookshelves).

Nice room, Scot! I have a funky old 1950s fireplace that I deperately want to tear out and put in something along the lines you have there. My father did something similar in his living room, too. You built those bookshelves yourself?

What library would be complete without that?! It would also serve to hide the entrance to the Skull Cave, of course.
