Never read the books but Rover & I got invited to the NYC red carpet premiere on Sunday.
For me , it was a kids movie & the many mystical concepts were a bit rushed.
The CGI was often powerful, if you like that sort of thing.
Yes, there are a few steampunky moments w/ mechanical items & fantasy driven dirigibles & aero-ships.
DanielCraig & NicoleKidman were fine, but didnt have that much to do beyond the parental figure in fairy tale roles.
The very young lady, DakotaBlueRichards in th lead did a nice job of holding up the film.

But I wasnt bowled over. Its a kid film, but too violent & confusing for the really young ones. I mean really, one polar bear character practically decapitates another.

We saw SamElliot in the theater a few feet from us! He was cool on screen as a cowboy/pilot & looked just as impressive in person.
Despite the NYC snow, Rover spotted TomWolfe in his white suit leaving the theater.

I like Sam, but if Hollywood needs a cowboy, he's the guy they sign up. I remember watching him in the Sackett movies on tv when I was a kid.

Hollywood doesn't only hire him for cowboy roles. "Seraphim Falls" and "3:10 to Yuma" had some great American cowboy actors also.

I read those books (Susan Cooper) when I was so young - OH then bought me the collected sequence for Christmas last year - and now I can't wait to see the film!!

(Ultimate wish fulfilment - c. Eccleston. In unrelieved black. On a Friesian horse. Damn, it's "Elizabeth" all over again!)

I don't know that series, but at first I thought you were saying they were adapting The Time of the Dark, Barbara Hambly's series. That wuld be a good movie, too.

That was one of the 25 or so magazines I got a free subscription to last year. I looked through each issue before donating it to the ;ibrary book sale (.50 a copy, too cheap). They had a very good series on John Wayne. Hey, I like wearing a cowboy hat.

I was an extra in Gettysburg. Met him and Martin Sheen. Both are real gentlemen. Hung out with us reenactors.

I just saw the film. Very enjoyable. There seems to be a big craze in the fantasy genre recently.

Sam Elliot was the highlight for me.

Sam Elliot is with out a doubt "the" cowboy image of our generation... From his voice to his appearance. Sure he has played other roles with equal style.... But for me, there is no better cowboy than Sam Elliot! The man can portray gritty, taciturn, funny, heartfelt and when needed slowburn deadly...

Just got back from seeing this. I thought it was a wonderful, captivating film, that has the end leaving you with bated breath, unable to believe it's all over. It also makes going back into the "real" world rather dreary and mundane, after the flight of fantasy you get to experience for those dear few moments in the theatre. Of course, I went out without having read the book yet, so my expectations probably weren't as high as they would have been had I done so, but I haven't heard too many awful things from people that had read the book and then saw the movie. Besides the story itself, I was fixated on the costumes/clothes, of which there were quite a few lovely examples. Daniel Craig especially, the suit he had on in the very beginning was incredible.

All in all, a very enjoyable and satisfying movie. I very much hope they continue the trilogy.
