There may be an old thread somewhere, I couldn't find it in the search, but last night the BBC re-ran the first of a three part series on the Art Deco period. Just a warning though, it's not all about art and glamour, they cover the run up to WW2 as well.
I really enjoyed it. All three parts are on YouTube.

A fascinating film.

Amazingly while 25% of Americans and 35% of Australians were out of work during the Depression, the film industry was booming. And exactly WHY it was booming is shown in that documentary. For a few pennies, you could forget about your troubles for two or three hours, go to a cinema, have some popcorn and watch a film and forget about the fact that you haven't been paid in three weeks, or that your son is working half-wages at the grocery store, or that your wife had to make lard sandwiches for dinner. Cinema offered escapism during a truly depressing time.
