The Man is gone

I can't believe it, we were listening to James Brown as we had Xmas dinner, and allowing for international time zones, that was roughly when he checked out. My band had also done Sex Machine and Superbad at a Xmas Eve concert the night before.
Drag out your vinyl or Cd's and play something to mark his passing, we will never see his like again.

Ah, damn, that's terrible news for Christmas Day. He truly was an original. Me and my wife saw him live several times, including once on our first wedding anniversary and he was always an incredible showman. We last saw him almost 20 years ago and even though he spent a lot of time at the back or sides of the stage, allowing the band to carry the gig, it was still a thrill to see him.

Not only did he almost single-handedly create The Funk - in the process becoming one of those people who truly deserved the cliche: "changed the face of popular music" - but he was a fine ballad singer and his early R&B material from the mid-50s was as exciting as anything released by any black American rocker.

R.I.P. Mr Brown - I'll miss you.
