The general decline in standards today

Hear! Hear! :thumb:
The school system of today (here, where I am) has failed the kids with all the "let them be the Individual" way of teaching. There are no longer grades for the young ones. Last week a kid told me he got a "Bravo!"; he was quick to add there's another one:

sign.
The schools are producing the Holy Individual generation of humans - that might be great.. however, each and every one of them (being the "individual") sees himself/herself as too valuable to spend his/hers precious time on such a trivial thing like a "job".
The same here. That is why my boys are both in Private school! They actually LEARN things there. They teach them how to think---not what to think----they concern themselves with the process not the outcome of the thought. :D

It's the broken window syndrome. If you leave one smashed pane, then as surely as night follows day, more will follow, and with it a rising crime rate.

And I wouldn't mind betting that if, as a small boy, you got THE LOOK from one of your parents, you shut up. Immediately.
You just knew that this was not open to negotiation! Am I right, or am I right?

What if you don't have THE LOOK? I know I probably don't.
for some people it's comes quite naturally

Oh, you have The Look handy. You just don't know it until you become a parent. Then it is obvious. :p[/URL]

The Look chased an undesireable character out of the lobby this afternoon. And I didn't even need the wig.

Meanwhile, the decline of civilization continues unabated. Some hacker-punk-jackass got hold of my debit card number somehow and ordered $400 worth of hipster fashion crap from a website in England. The bank put a stop on it, but I can't get a new card until next week, and none of the gas pumps around here take cash anymore. Ah, tell me again why I should love the 21st Century so much.

Sorry to read about the theft of your debit card. I never understood the logic of excluding a form of payment.

Experience, a college degree, and they'll try you out with an unpaid internship. How is anyone supposed to support themselves with those requirements?!

My industry hires people with no experience all the time. You do, however, need some education, be willing to show up to work before 10:00am, work 5 days a week, and pass a drug screen. In return, you get a six figure salary with fantastic life benefits. The 5 days a week and drug screen are the big "weed out" (no pun intended) requirements.

Oh, and unpaid internships ought to be illegal. If labor had any guts left in this country, they would be.

Most are. One of the requirements for an unpaid internship to be legal is that the employer cannot receive any direct benefit to his business due to the activities of the intern. This places most in the illegal category.

On a side note, I was gobsmacked when I found out how much my company pays our interns. Typically more than most employees.

It's 4am now, and I am here because I'm anxious. I've been anxious all week in fact. I just want to get somewhere in my life already! Not only does this mean getting some security money-wise, but it also means dealing with the grief of losing most of my family.

Out of curiosity, how old are you? If you're under 40, what on earth makes you think you should somehow have "gotten somewhere" and have financial security?

If I had anything beyond a high school diploma, I'd say sign me up lol
