Rovercoat

I was out windowshopping w/ Rover & we spotted this kooky overcoat.
It was marked 'Designer sample' so you wont be seeing it on the streets.

Gotta love the THREE lapels.

Really when you look at its themes , totally got ripped off by Trek.

Well, "Forbidden Planet" was just Shakespeare's "The Tempest" with ray guns, and Star Trek has always also borrowed heavily from the Bard. So while there could be some borrowing, many of them are not new stories.

The triple breasted coat, or whatever you want to call it, is fascinating. Odd, but fascinating.

I like that coat.

As to stories, well hey..... as the Good Book says, "there is nothing new under the sun." Pretty much all stories borrow from somewhere or other. The difference between plagiarism and originality is that originality borrows from enough different sources that it becomes something different due to the mix... ;)

Pretty uniform, yeah... though TBH I'd feel a lot like an extra in Springtime for hitler wearing that (I'm sure those visual associations were deliberate!!).

On the way to work, black or grey pants, blue shirt and pea coat are the local uniform, and the only hat a baseball cap. Even when required to wear a suit and tie, in an effort to demonstrate that they are one of the guys, not dissimilar, baseball cap (or watch cap) and pea coat accompany the suit in foul weather.

In my humble opinion, the greratest "sin" by far of modern corporate dressing is those who get it "right" enough..... right until you get to the comedy tie, waistcoat, or other, similar such "look at me! I'm whacky, fun and not like all the rest!" accessorising. That sort of novelty item is what kicks my inner clothese snob into gear big time!

Doesn't anyone else think this would be awfully hard to wrestle off whilst drunk? :D What? Like that's not your number one concern when buying clothes! ;)

That, dear lady, is why some of us have a hard-and-fast two-drink limit... usually two drinks over six hours.lol (And my number-one consideration is "would MacArthur even consider wearing something like this?", but that's just 'cause I'm weird...)

Television and Commercialism has destroyed modern fashion

Thanks for posting that article Matt. “Survive the season in style.” What a joke. I tried to click on the article to read it but it just came up with an ad. I too have noticed the kids these days wearing camouflage everything it seems. I haven’t seen it yet, but I am sure that someone out there has made pink camouflage articles and clothing for the “warrior woman” of 2007’s latest fashion craze.

The war in Iraq and Afghanistan and television shows like Jericho are spawning a trend in military styled clothing and accessories of late. Of course, this will most obviously be followed with another throwback retro anti-military style soon after, perhaps coinciding with a democratic victory in the white house and the end of the Iraq war. Who knows, but these things are entirely predictable. They say that if you put something on TV then over 1000 people will want it the next day, that’s how powerful television and movies are.

I would venture to say that the most prevalent copycat crime that is committed these days is “television fashion copying.” “Did you see what she was wearing?” I can’t count how many times I’ve heard women that I have been around say something like that.

I would not call what we are in a “Style Dark Ages”, but I would definitely agree that something similar to that is going on. Something has died in the American public as far as style is concerned that is for certain. But I think it relates more to commercialism and television and anything else. As well, the past 30 years has seen numerous advances in synthetic materials. I might even guess that some new television show is just an excuse for some fashion designer just to try out some new fangled clothing material and get away with having you and I pay for it all.

I say commercialism because what I find more prevalent than a lack of style per say is a lack of function in my clothing. The pockets aren’t designed to hold anything specific as they once were, except of course for the newly designed “cell phone” pockets. Just look at the lack of vests these days. A vest is one of the most functional items of clothing ever created, yet no one bothers to wear them. Instead, they only complain when their pants pockets won’t hold correctly the 5 or so different things that they are trying to put in them. How many of you have more than one item in any of your pockets? Does it seem strange to you at all? I bet it doesn’t, however, to me it is complete nonsense that I have to put everything that I want to carry in my front two pants pockets. This is just one of the various reasons that I am learning to make my own cloths. Commercialism has destroyed function because they never consider function over cost unless the entire populous decided to carry the same thing at the same time, which is why they now begrudgingly have included cell phone pockets in certain clothing items. Commercialism on a global scale is one of the main contributors to a deterioration of form, function, and style.

Television is the other main culprit to “The Dark Fashion Ages” as you call it. Television is an outlet for a fashion designer to try “New” untested ideas in clothing and have it completely paid for without having to answer to anyone for form and function concerns. So much so that the clothing on a movie set often doesn’t even work for the scene in which it is designed. Why? Because the clothing designer never actually considered the purpose of the clothing but only his own purpose of experimentation, that is until the actors complain and the director notices a problem in the flow of the scene.

Yes my friends, commercialism and television have destroyed modern fashion and have robbed us of the great clothing of yesteryear. We now have to search in vein and study hard to recapture the form and function of the clothing from the past. We have to basically start from scratch in my opinion and start once again creating clothing that works in function, adds form to the human body again, and last but not least, creates an appealing style without compromising the first two criteria.

As far as future style goes, I have always thought that "Firefly" had a really interesting mixture of looks - a cool blend of vintage, Old West, Asian and futuristic looks, with some other little things mixed in here and there. The clothing really adds to the show in a nice, subtle way.

I WANT Nate Filson's coat! And his sidearm!

How do you call this shawl collar coat a reference to BladeRunner & Phillip Marlowe?
BTW, Bladerunner was a visually stunning film & widely imitated regardless of its box office performance. I see the rest of this fashion article uses an image of CliveOwen from ChildrenofMen. A film that was advertised as a sort of new Bladerunner. I didnt really care for it. Ironic that instead of lookign forward & creating images, the new sci-fi just sort of presents current 21st century imagery. Is that a clever statement or lazy imagination?

Nope. It was a size small. Thats young MrRover trying it on. He wasnt moved by the Bladerunner look. Actually, the belt annoyed him as it suggests the line of a current messengerbag. But I really liked the extra lapel.

I can see the issue with the belt. If the belt was replaced with a caped-look, the cuffs and epaulets weren't so busy, and the extra lapel remained as is, this could be an interesting coat. It would be nice to have a view of the back. Was there a yoke and/or venting?

Now that I've said all that, I'd just start from scratch and pilfer the lapels.

double jacket lapels

Matt, thought this might amuse you.

At a glance it looks like a two button jacket over a one button jacket

But its not its another weird jacket design for the 21st century
