The satchel, man purse, or whatever you like to call it, is a very intriguing accessory. Some men can pull it off, some simply can't.

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would have a problem with this. Since my undergraduate days I've carried a shoulder bag if I was going to be out all day, and I toted books, newspapers, umbrellas, scarves, Kleenex, pens and paper, and other useful items and never once thought there was anything remotely effeminate about it. On another thread some time ago there were some indignant comments about "those Brooklyn hipsters" wearing beards and fedoras, and they reminded me of the endless grief I got when I was a kid for being one of the first to wear long hair. I often wonder what it is in some people that they have to impose their limited world-views on others.

So while we've discussed Indy's iconic gas mask bag many times over the years, it appears there's never been a dedicated thread, and certainly not one I can find where this specific issue is discussed. I dithered on starting a new thread, but then I remembered this old faithful which I felt could do with a revival anyhow.

Backdrop to my question is that back in 2022, I picked up one of Wested's replica MKVII bags. It's a very nicely made thing indeed, a perfect recreation of the original model right down to replicating all of the original pockets inside. Initially, I was concerned that this might make it rather limited in practical use. However, it turned out to be a joy. The pockets allow room for a novel or two, my mp3 player, a half litre bottle, passport, wallet and phone... it's a great all-round alternative to filling my trouser pockets with stuff, especially in the Summer hellheat when a jacket becomes unbearable. It weighs almost nothing, making it perfect for travel - great for the few bits you might want to hand on the plane, or to tuck into your luggage to use as a daybag at your destination. I've done both. It only has two real drawbacks. One, that central division precludes it from fitting a 10" tablet, and two, being single thickness canvas it's not a bag to carry in heavy rain. (I've used a scotchguard which makes it "showerproof", but that has limits of course).

So... I find myself looking for... not a replacement, but another similar bag for comparable occasions. The Magnoli 'modern layout' version would fit the tablet, but it's canvas still. Wested, however, now do a leather version (better for rainwear), which also appears to have dispensed with the interior divisions, which works for the tablet. Just curious whether anyone has tried one of these? The brown looks to be the 'safe' option, maybe the 'distressed' hide. I'm tempted by the notion of the black, but it looks....odd in the promo photos here. https://wested.com/collections/indiana-jones-all-products/products/indy-adventure-bag-4222-p Would be interested to know if anyone else has or has seen somewhere online 'real world' shots. These bag are by no means a huge outlay - we're talking very far from Saddleback money - but they're still enough of a spend that I'd prefer not to order one 'blind' as it were. I really wish Wested hadn't gone 'online only' - there's quite a lot of stuff in their range I might have considered if I could just have tried it on first, but wouldn't risk 'online only', despite being only a couple of dozen miles away.

O, this is a nice thread. I like man bags.

@Edward the Indy adventure bag is interesting. The distressed seems more appealing.

It definitely looks like it has more character. I'd like a black edc that sort of size too, but in the one photo on the Wested site, the black version just looks... odd somehow.
