I didn’t realize the Cavanagh edge went back that far—I thought it was more a 40s or 50s innovation.
I cannot remember when it was first introduced. I know Stetson was fooling around with their felted edge (and other brim treatments) in the thirties. I have a thirties Dobbs with the Cavanaugh edge...it is very narrow....but other than that is just like the later versions. The sweat is stamped and I belive has the patent date as part of that logo......I need to dig it out and look at it again.....though I do belive I posted pictures in this thread somewhere....... Overall, that hat has the most remarkable felt...

The Cavanagh Edge was introduced in 1913. Only Crofut & Knapp used it for their hats, which included Dobbs, until after the patent ran out in 1930.
