Josh, that's the second one of this style to turn up here, though the first was a Cavanagh. You can find the first one here. I have yet to run across what this might be. It's so radically different from a tuxedo hat that I hesitate to call it that. It does have a formality to it. Maybe the ad you were thinking of was the Bunker ad that's posted a few replies earlier in the thread I linked to. It's not the same as the Bunker hat, though. If I ever figure it out, i'll let you know.

Thanks, Brad! I knew I had seen one of these before. I actually did not remember the Bunker hat ad, even though its super cool. I thought I had seen an old Dobbs newspaper ad from the 30's that showed these grosgrain hats, but i've seen so many hat ads, I could totally be mistaken. Hopefully we'll figure out one day what these things are. :)

This showed up yesterday. Something a little different.
The Dobbs "Sunbrero".

I had never heard of this model, so I asked the Professor about it. He said he'd seen it referenced in ads in 59 and 62, so I'm going out on a limb and guessing late 50's early 60's. No tags other than the stub of a gold HCA size tag that fell out when I was probing under the sweat. The leather sweat is rather thick, and just a little stiff. I'm hoping Lexol and head warmth will remedy that.
The straw is very fine and lightweight with an open weave. 63 grams total weight. I'm not sure of the type, but if the sweatbands were the same, this one would be lighter than my Parabuntal by a gram or two. 3" brim, 4 1/4" crown. 2000 lbs. of cool!

Just "showed up," huh? Like, it followed you home?

This has been a good week in the Dobbs thread. Three spectacular hats! I especially like the sunbrero. An interesting older style for a 1950s hat.

A major bummer on the Game Bird...the sweatband, which had been soft and supple (and freshly Lexoled) cracked at the temples and began crumbling. There's now a hole in it. I just ordered a replacement from Bond. Oh well, I guess life ain't always perfect. Good thing I don't fear a project.

Got my dobbs back. I think it's 50s not sure though . I got it at an estate sale for $5 an it was very dirty with a stained ribbon the hat looked brown originally it had a grey band that was very stained so I had a new one . I was gonna go dark green but they only had thin Ribbons in dark green so I got a thick ribbon in medium green . I'm thinking I maybe shoulda picked another color but I like the way it looks definitely different .
