I ordered my first "city" fedora today. I normally wear "rural" or Western hats. It's a Dobbs Beechwood on closeout at Levine's Hats for only $95. Shipping was $13 for my order. I chose it because the crease is almost cattleman style and the felt band makes it seem a little less dressy. We'll see how it goes.

It's hard to find a clear picture of the Glen Cove so I can't really judge the crease. The Beechwood is a beaver fur product, or at least that's what the retailer claims. The hat bands are very different to be sure. It will be here on Wednesday. I'll be able to make more meaningful remarks at that time.

Really similar other than the band. It might be as simple as the manufacturer using the same equipment to turn out different products.

Great article, Robert, thanks for posting it. Nice views of the new flagship Dobbs store after the old one at 620 Fifth Avenue was abandoned. What I like is that they used the same basic showcase and drawer design in the new Cavanagh shop at the same time.

My city hat arrived today. It is my first true fedora. It is called Dobbs Beechwood. It is black. The finish is somewhat shaggy so that the tips of hairs on the fur catch the light and create a silvery sparkling accent. The band is made from the same felt as the hat and the 2 1/2" brim is bound in black ribbon. The 4 1/4" crown is creased with a center dent and pinches which are closer to the sides than the front of the crown. I got it for half price on a closeout from Levin's. It is actually fairly sporty as black hats go. I like it a lot.

'50-'53 Dobbs Gay Prince

Dropping by the Diner tonight, my Dobbs Gay Prince.

Crown: 4-3/4", as creased.
Ribbon: 13/16", felt.
Brim: Dimensional, 3" at the front, 2-7/8" at the sides and back.
Sweatband: 2".

Detail of the OPS, or 'Office of Price Stabilization' tag, dating the hat to 1950-1953. Note indicated price of $20.

Dobbs seems to have such a nice lineup. I don't know much about them, but I have three (a porkpie, a straw porkpie-ish something or other, and a bowler) that I bought second hand from ebay and antique shops for not much more than a song, and they all seem to really fit naturally and comfortably, without my wanting to modify them. I love the hats in all of your photos!
By the way-- does one have to put photos on a own web page in order to post them in a reply? No simple upload on this forum, if I understand correctly?

Thank you for your kind words, bowlerman, and welcome to the board! Dobbs certainly made some fine hats 'back in the day'.

Regarding photo uploading to the forum, I think it is actually quite straightforward. You will need to sign up for one of the myriad photo-hosting sites available on the web, such as Imageshack, which is what I use, and upload your photos to that site. Thereupon you can drag/drop or cut/paste the URL of the desired images and embed them directly to your post. There are of course several other methods of posting photos as well. Let me know if you have any problems.

Look forward to seeing images of your Dobbs hats!

Beautiful hat, delectans! The condition looks amazing. Does the felt feel like suede? I have a Mallory in the same color with the same ribbon treatment. The only difference on my Mallory is that the brim is a bit smaller and the brim doesn't have the saddle stitch, just the ribbon.
