Beautiful Black Heather felt of fine quality that molds beautifully. The brim is 2-1/4" wide with a smoothly finished edge. The crown is 5-5/8" and quite straight. The wide and soft pure black non-reeded sweatband is deeply embossed with no gold overlay. The seam is taped and the stitching is very small and closely spaced in parallel. Ads ran for the Gilt-Edge from 1935-39. This one had a newspaper from 1936 under the sweat originally. Condition is really amazing for the felt liner and sweatband--no damages or significant wear. Definitely a long oval.

Rlk, that's just a fantastic hat!:eusa_clap

I've long wondered what set a Gilt Edge hat apart. In 1936 they sold for $7.50, while the same hat with a Cavanagh Edge was $10.00. You mention a "smoothly finished edge." Does it seem to be more finished than a typical raw edge?

Buler, great find on the Two Timer! :eusa_clap Even if it is a questionable name.lol Can't imagine what Hat Corp. was thinking, but I know the ads explain it for us.

Rlk is absolutely right about the age of your Two Timer. It has the gold embossed Dobbs logo, which is late-'40s into the '50s. It also has the '50s and later style of reorder tag, though it's possible this style of tag also started in the late-'40s.

Thanks for sharing these fine hats with us, gents!

Nathan (NDW76), welcome to the Lounge and the Dobbs Diner membership! Looking forward to seeing photos of your new hat.

Thanks Brad. The edge has been finished much like a polished edge for a glass or stone top. It has the same finish as the the rest of the hat and no sense that a raw cut has been made. The felt is moderately thick(Cavanagh-like weight) but feels soft and lightweight.

Hi; New to this forum, and my first try at posting.
This Dobbs I just picked up. Looks to be in perfect shape. Bought originally from Simpsons Dept . store for $19.95, sometime before 1991.
The hat is one size to big,so I had to pad the liner.

Some help

Hello,

I'm new to the form and to vintage hats and was hopping you could supply me with some information on my recent Dobbs purchase.. Its a black Dobbs that came with the box, I'm thinking it's 1950's, I paid $50 including delivery. (I don't think I over paid considering I pay that for Modern hats manufactured in China..)

Here are some pictures.. Any information would be helpful.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the Lounge and to the Dobbs Diner, Kilguy.

Your very nice Dobbs is from 1965 or later, based on the Cushion-Aire sweatband. You bought it for a great price considering the size. Wear it and enjoy it!

Here my latest Dobbs. An interesting Derby; I'd wanted one to wear to supplement the '20s Dobbs in my avatar photo, but one that was slightly taller. The one has a 5 1/8" English-styled belled crown, and is slightly flatter on top (waviness notwithstanding). It's also stiffer in the crown and brim than my other Dobbs, about as stiff as my late-'20s/early-'30s Cavanagh Derby.

Very distinctive interior. Black sweatband, folded and taped, which suggests no newer than late 1930s. Surprisingly, it has a gold embossed logo, something that I didn't think turned up until the late-'40s.[huh]

It has the older style of factory label (though there are several versions of this type of label from 1908 through the '30s).

The neatest thing is the embroidered liner tip. I haven't figured out when and how these fit into the Dobbs lineup.

My best guess is this is a '30s hat. The pleated liners seem to be quite prevalent in the '30s, though I know they date back earlier than that.

All in all, a very fascinating and wearable Derby.

What a neat hat! Too bad the tip sticker is long gone.

Is the sweatband stitched? Looks like it might be. Interesting that it has the Tru-size sweatband adjuster and a '40s style factory tag, but also a tag reminiscent of the '30s factory tags, and includes the model name!

I can't keep up with all of Dinerman's posts today!

This is interesting, at least a couple of decades later than my Derby above, but it also has the embroidered liner, though with a slightly different graphic design, and what looks to be an oil skin tip cover. I wonder why the occasional use of embroidered liner tips?
