Fatwoul, aren't you at least worried about having the front of your hat almost folded to the point of having a corner at the crown?

Nope, not in the slightest. But I thank you for your concern. As RBH points out, its a fairly typical crease for Indy fans, although personally I just like the razor edge it gives me.

I can't help but think that's not any helpful for the longevity of the felt.

Well, for one thing, A Federation Deluxe is hardly an irreplaceable hat, so if the felt of the pinch were to wear through, it wouldn't be the end of the world.

However, the shape I've put it into doesn't itself put the felt under a particular strain, so long as the shape is left alone. It's constant flexing back and forth that causes felt to deteriorate - the sort of flexing you get from picking a hat up by the pinch. In fact, since the pinch of my Fed Dlx is so tight, there isn't much room for flexing, so it might even make it more resistant to that deterioration.

The problem with a pinch like that is that is is more permanent than a gentler one would be. I doubt my Fed Dlx could ever be effectively reblocked, because of the creases in it, but since a reblock is half the price of a new hat, by the time it needs it, I can just get a brand new one and start again.

My Fieldmaster also has a fairly sharp pinch, although not as sharp as this hat. It's certainly not a treatment I'd recommend for an HJ Poet. Not sure those things could handle it. ;)

The crown on my regular fed is thin so it has a razor sharp pinch no problem!!
But you can put a sharp crease in meatal and have no problem unless you continually bend it, like Robin says.

Most of my fedoras...not all... but most have a sharp front pinch. Like Fats I like the look it gives a hat.

PLUS it makes for better streamlining. Let's you walk faster.

Actually, I'm a little surprised to see you defending the tight pinch, RBH. Most of the hats I've seen sport something looser. That's actually one of the things I like most about the TVA. I've always though the looser pinch was part of the "everyman" quality you are so fond of.

Yes good point, forgot to mention that myself. The fact that the felt is fairly thin allows it to be folded on itself tighter than you'd expect, without any problems.

Metal? IC, are you wearing your tinfoil hat again? I told you, the lizard people can still read your thoughts with that thing on. :D

Hope so. That will leave people like me with the tight pinches cos we actually like them, not cos of some old guy in a movie. :D

Actually, I am highly amused at the thought of all these Indy fans wandering around with hats with perforated fronts to their hats, after changing the pinch all the time. lol

My front pinches vary. Some are close, some are farther apart. I never liked the tight-all-the-way-down pinch. Even on an Indy type hat, I don't make them that tight all the way to the ribbon. I have a gray hat that has a very Indy-ish crown, but a 2 1/2" brim. I don't think the two go together, and I need to rework the crown and open the pinch up some.

The Indy hat in my avatar is about as tight a pinch as I can stand.

You could put a zipper along the pinch and have air conditioning!

Thats funny after reading this I looked at my hats.
The TVA has a semi tight pinch. Not as loose as my Young Indy Federation.
My Campdraft, Stratoliner, Penneys Marathon and Adventurebilt all have 'tighter' pinchs.
My TVA, YIJ Federation have a lose pinch.
I'm going to have to study on this Anomaly.... [huh]

I have studied this anomaly... and this is what I came up with.
I love the pinch on my Campdraft

<a href="http://imageshack.us"><img src="http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/3522/hpim1742eh8.jpg" border="0" alt="campdraft3"/></a>[/

and was not happy with it with a more open pinch. It is not as tight as my Adventurebilt.

It was not really till my Mile Moore TVA that I started liking the more open type pinch.
I dont have a whole lot of hats but more have a tight pinch than not.

Actually, I am the same. I don't like the way that the ribbon comes away from the crown if the pinch goes too far down. For that reason, I always finish the pinch before that happens, typically about 0.5 to 0.75 inch above the ribbon.

It's probably the angle and lighting, because the pinch on my Federation doesn't go any lower than the pinch on that Tawny Fawn of yours.

Looks good, by the way, even without the 'tache

Funnily enough, those are the two of your hats that always spring to my mind. Maybe it's because your TVA is more recent, and because about the time I was on COW, you were singing the praises of the YIJC-style creases. I just don't think of your tighter pinched-hats, for some reason.

That's part of the reason The Rusty has a loose - almost non-existent - pinch. lol

The reason I did the Federation that way was to have a different style Indy hat. I have only one AB and it has the Raiders crease, so the Federation I wanted to be different [hence the YIJ crease] I really like the YIJ because you dont see that crease very often on a Indy hat.

On me.... Isn't it readily identifiable when a hat is blocked in a diamond when you see it worn from the side?
