or because it's not actually there. Most old creases I've seen are a whole lot less fussy and technical than the modern ones that people agonize about getting perfectly symmetrical. Chop punch pinch.

I still don't see it.

OK, guys. Just to be clear -- I was just kidding...(hence the :D :D :D )

Thanks, fellas!

Submitted for your approval is hubby's "new" to him Knox. We purchased it at an estate sale for $10. We were told that the original owner (who had STACKS of hatboxes with hats - we came home with three that fit hubby's noggin/taste) was a local banker. He also seemed to be loyal to one particular department store where he purchased all of his hats. I was told the store was long gone years ago by the locals (I live in the next town over and wasn't familliar with the store name, so I asked). I think its interesting to get the low-down on stuff whenever I can. This family took immaculate care of all of their stuff - I even bought myself a few things! (but that's a subject for another thread)

So, here's a profile shot:

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0277.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0277.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The sweatbands on all of the hats we looked at were in phenomenal condition:

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0267.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0267.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Here's the hat shop logo - I just thought this was neat. You don't see this kind of detailing anymore.

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0271.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0271.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The liner is a little dirty, but really not too worse for wear:

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0269.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0269.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And finally the bash. I think that's a great term for it, by the way - certainly descriptive! This is the original bash that was in the hat when we bought it. By looking at the images here, I think it is obvious that it was done by hand - probably by the original owner:

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0273.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0273.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

This hat has the best diamond bash out of the bunch. He has a 100% beaver Resistol (also gotten for $10) that I will post next, but it's bash is harder to make out in the photos.

So, whattya think?

Beaver Resistol

Here's hubby's new Resistol. The color was hard to capture - it's a deep greenish brown. More brown than green, but definately with a green cast to it. The hatband is black. Any shiny spots are just the camera flash, and not "worn shiny" spots on the felt.

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0247.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0247.jpg" border="0" alt="Resistol"></a>

A shot of this baby's sweatband with logo (and the original owner's initials):

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0244.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0244.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Sweatband at the front of the crown. The felt on this one is definately "kitten soft", that's not just a sales pitch!

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0243.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0243.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Again, same hat shop/department store (but different logo - more simple):

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0241.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0241.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The liner - pristine on this baby:

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0235.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0235.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And, what we all came to see - the bash:

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0253.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0253.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I know it looks more teardrop, but it really is a diamond, just the point towards the back of the head is soft, and hard to photograph. He has two other vintage hats - neither with a diamond bash, so I will have to show them off for him on another thread. One last detail I wanted to share with you guys, though, was this:

<a href="http://s278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/?action=view&current=IMG_0256-Copy.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk84/mixercollector/IMG_0256-Copy.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The original sales reciept - found tucked away in the bottom of its box.

Cheers!

-Sherri

Sorry if I got a little :eek:fftopic: by showing off all of the details of the hats.

Hi, Sherri. Tell him he'd like it here. But in the meantime we'd love to see his hats.

Thanks for the kind words. I keep telling him that he would fit right in with you guys.....

Hope you dig his hats! I will be posting images of his panama hat et al. on the appropriate threads soon.

Cheers!

Here's my submission to the authority. Looks very much like the hat in RBH's avatar, would it be the same type of hat?

It's a Stetson 100 which Optimo in Chicago cleaned, resized and, at my request, bashed cattleman style. I then changed it into a "generic" fedora style, and upon viewing this thread, tried my hand at a diamond bash.

I'm keeping it this way, looks very "Américain"!

WOW I like it with the fedora crease! Looks super that way!!!
The hat in my avatar is a Stetson Stratoliner, I think there were only a subtle
difference in the types of thin ribbons Stetson made.
But Pablo you did great with the diamond crease in that one!
WELL DONE!

I think that Knox is very fine and, as you said, very well taken care of. The Resistol is a nice looking hat too. Congrats on your finds. I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your husband's hats.

We have a friend who, when she found out I am interested in hats and vintage hats, told me her father wore hats and that her mother still has them. She offered to let me look through them, but as yet I have not. I'll have to bring it up to her again.

Tri-Corner Crease...

I was watching "The Best Years of Our Lives" last night (a wonderful film), and, of course, couldn't help but check out the lids. Caught sight of two lids that were bashed in "tri-corner" fashion -- one point at the front of the crease, and two points at the far corners of the back of the lid. It almost looked like someone had taken a billiard rack and used it to crease the top of the lid. Has anyone else seen this kind of crease? Very unique looking...

Cheers,
JtL

Yes, Dinerman: that is true hat art.

Oh, sure, I belong to the millimetric type, but deep down I know that's not the solution.
One thing, though: for "chop punch pinch" you need goooood felt, malleable without even steam or water.
