The Desperate Hours

I caught this movie very early this morning but, fell asleep during the last ten minutes. http://imdb.com/title/tt0047985/

This stars Humphrey Bogart and Fredric March. Three escaped criminals movie into a family's home and terrorizes the family. Admittedly, it was kind of weird for me to see Bogart as this type of character. I've seen him be a sort of wise alec-y good guy at heart but in this film he was kind of sinister and mean. As with any good movie, I got really caught up in the story and of course, Mr. Bogart does an outstanding job. Unfortunately, feeling the effects of staying up all night, I fell asleep during the resolution of the film so, I'll have to watch it again. A must see.

If you have not seen Bogey play against the particular type you mentioned see him in Petrified Forest or In a Lonely Place. Great stuff.

Bogart does some of his deeper acting in this film. He does a great, different than usual job in this and The Caine Mutiny.

I like this film as well. His later films are very interesting; consider this one, The Harder They Fall, the aforementioned The Caine Mutiny, and even The Barefoot Contessa, it seemed that Bogart was a good enough actor to easily transition into the more realistic more psychologically driven style of films. It seemed that he had another decade of good films in him, even as films in general were getting away from the more theatrically directed style of the 30s and 40s.

The Desperate Hours also features one of my favorite character actors, Ray Collins.

I tend to prefer Bogey in heroic roles, but I think he enjoyed playing psychotic characters more, as in Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Caine Mutiny.

Bogey never really had a problem accessing the dark side of a character even when he played the hero, and he only got better as he aged. His last few films are not all that great; by then he was often just phoning it in.

The Desperate Hours is a great one. It was remade in the 80s or early 90s by Micahel Cimino starring Mickey Rourke and Anthony Hopkins. Guess who plays the Bogey role and who gets the Frederic March part.
