Hi All, I just stumbled across this thread as im planning to sell or trade my mister freedom n1H, but just want everyone’s 2cent if the fit is too big.

I’m 173cm, 80 kg for reference. The jacket is in size 40 and I’ve emailed mister freedom and other retailers they all suggested size 40 but I personally think it looks too boxy. What do you guys think?

Hey,

It’s always a personal feel and sometimes it feels different than seen on pictures.
It could be a bit big indeed, long and wide. How does the chest feel?
Did you compare measurements of 38 and 40?

Shoulders and chest could be an issue, length wise not I think.

It’s also how you want to wear it? More snug or relaxed?

Originally they were worn more relaxed and big. That’s what I see on old pics. But I prefer to wear it more snug.

Hey man! Thanks for the reply, it’s really comfortable and they said it’s suppose to look like the picture I sent em of me wearing it. Chest has plenty of room shoulders is a good fit, I could easily layer with this jacket but as I was looking for a more slimmer look this deck jacket makes me look really bulky. I regret not trying the size 38 as they told me to get a size 40, so I pulled the trigger on it right away.

Yes it’s difficult when not being able to try on. Happens often.
It’s also more difficult to work only with measurements as the deck has a very thick wool/fur layer inside.

My Fw N1 is much thicker than the IH I have which was my size reference.

But consider too that even it’s snug in the beginning, the wool/fur will flatten with wear and the jacket will become more comfortable and wide.

Even though the body and sleeves are more on the long side, I don't think it looks bad.
The style of the jacket can handle it.
But if you don't feel comfortable in it, get rid of it.

Hey thanks for the reply. I think I might trade it for a Freewheelers 40, or the same MF N1H size 38.

This is an important point and the explanation for much angst among clothing nuts here and especially in other forums. Fit preferences and in particular designs have changed but the insistence on authentic patterns etc for much 'repro' clothing means that today we are trying to get clothes designed for a looser fit on smaller men to somehow satisfy our modern-day desire for snug fits on bigger men. We also try today to get a good for for parkas and whatnot over a t-shirt, when such things were designed to be worn over several layers. Anyways, I think the fit of Tca46's jacket is perfect and qujite authentic, fwiw.

I have the Iron Heart as well, and I really like it a lot. However, it is a trim fit. I'm usually an XL in coats, or a 46 with wide shoulders and narrow waist. With the IH I had to size up to a XXL in the N1, but the fit is spot on for what I like in a coat. Other than that it's pretty much as advertised, although a little on the pricey side. But it looks like it will last me for as long as I look after it as the build quality is top notch.
I realize this is quite an old post. What are your measurements?
I find I have to size up x2 in IH as well, usually to an XXL. I’m 6’1” 175lbs with a 42” chest.

I tried referring to their staff vitals, but honestly can‘t see it being accurate.… Some of the staff are larger than me by 20-30 Lbs, same chest, and even taller and they wear size large or XL ….

Luckily IH has a very easy return policy so it only took a couple of attempt to figure out my size at minimal costs ($43.00 CAD).

The deck jackets were worn bigger than today. Almost like a parka.

But consider too that in old days people were smaller and not all sizes available and people were given jackets. At those days and for the purpose of wear they didn’t need to look good in them. When you need to work in them you might need some extra space.
Same goes for leather flight jackets. People were put into jackets which were available. Jackets needed to protect from bad weather conditions . I really doubt they all took 1-2h to fit the right size.

I'd say. Forget about what the fit was like in those WWII photos. I have read that they are often left on hangers by the hatch so whoever goes up to the deck can grab it. Hence one would always grab a bigger one so they can zip up or button up easily. If you look at IG photos of people wearing N-1 today, they wear it open most of the time and some even wear one size too small to get a tight fit.
Besides your MFSC is a cross between a deck hook jacket (a blouse length jacket) and N-1.
Just go with what you like and take into account the number of layers.

I think that is a really good fit for an N-1. I own a couple of these myself from iron Heart and I think this style of jacket looks fine when it is a bit looser like yours.

Looks fine. The proprietor of MF designed the jacket for his own build - he has broad shoulders, hence the boxy fit. But these jackets were designed to be worn with layers. I think yours looks good.......they are more comfortable in a looser fit anyway.

If you look back through the thread the consensus is that the Real McCoys probably do the slimmest N1.

Comes down to function vs fashion as stated in numerous replies.
I hope it gets cold where you are because these are kind of useless otherwise (imo).
I really like my Buzz Rickson Demotex (that’s the thicker version of the two that they make), I use it at my workplace where I drive clients to and from medical appointments. The weather that I use it in varies between about 0° C down to -30s, having to move between the van, outdoors and inside. The nice thing about these is that they’re uncoated and made with cotton and wool/alpaca, making it comfy and not too sweaty when inside for a few minutes. I just wish the buttons were better secured : )

Yea, I travel between Taiwan and Canada so it does get pretty cold during winter in Canada.
