I suggest you search for Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky:)

Thanks. I didn't recognize the title or name but when I found it on youtube I immediately recognized it.:) Like many of my generation I associate it with Fantasia because that's the first time I heard it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Ca_edg6RE

Now I've checked different versions of it, some faster but this is how I'm used to hearing it.

  • Bruckner: Symphony No. 8, in the Günter Wand performance recorded live at Lubeck cathedral.

Yes! That's phenomenal.

There's probably a certain repertoire we can mostly take for granted--Karajan / BPH thundering through Mozart, Van Cliburn's Rachy Piano Concerto, etc; I'd add to that William Byrd's masses, particularly the Catholic 4- and 5-voice (profound even to a crotchety old atheist like me), Smetana's Ma Vlast, and Elgar's Cello Concerto. Never quite found a recording of that that got it like I like it though.

Ha I didn't realize that piece was in a film. I've never seen the Fantasia films.

Can someone please help me identify a classical piece of music?

It's a piano piece. I believe it was composed by Chopin. It's a slow, sad piano solo, it sounds kinda tragic and creepy and it's one of his more famous compositions. Does anyone know any of his pieces that might fit the bill?

Nearer to here than to there
Marais -- The Bells of St. Genevieve
Saint-Saens -- Danse Macabre
Andrea Falconieri --Folias echa para mi Senora Dona Tarolilla de Carallenos
Wagner -- just about everything

I'm lucky, in that there is a 24-hour, all classical, listener-supported (meaning non-commercial) radio station in the local area.

Cool thread!

I love classical music but don`t really know composers and/or piece titles. Here`s a few I particularly love:

Erik Satie - Gymnopedie No.1 Haunting melody.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Xe2Rft62Kg

Johann Sebastien Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor (organ) This one uses the "Music Machine" and shows you notes as they are played.Nice!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipzR9bhei_o&feature=fvsr

Johann Strauss - The Blue Danube Waltz One of my absolute favorites!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKbV-q_TEVQ

I`ll even throw in a bit of opera(just to show I`m not provincial) :p
Di Stefano - Pagliacci Makes me wish I spoke Italian.

Di Stefano - Rigoletto (1955)
http://www.youtube.com/user/BigHosMan#p/f/64/UaXbZTLAe6Q

And...possibly one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Giacomo Puccini - O Mio Babbino Caro

Andre Rieu`s version of the Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet

Beethoven -String Quartet in C sharp minor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwti4feAA6k

Bruckner - Symphony no. 9 - Scherzo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKTgDM1HwUM

Rachmaninoff - Bogoroditse Devo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctQFWwK1yF4

Boellman - Toccata from Suite Gothique, Op. 25
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNpI6AEyUY&feature=related
Hard to find a video on youtube that does this as much justice as the tape recording I first heard it on. I personally think this piece rivals Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D for raw power, if not for intricacy and length.

Tonight I get to see Verdi's Aida. I cannot begin to explain how excited I am about that.
