Well, here I go with my first post:

A thread by Jupiter in Classifieds put me onto an interesting publication, The Chap, a "satirical magazine for the modern gentleman". They also have a website http://www.thechap.net.

A visit to their website immediately sparked a question: How does a British trilby differ from a US-made fedora? Based on appearance alone, it seems a trilby has a high crown and a narrower (~2-in) brim.

What is the opinion of the experts?

Dear Wolfman Jack,
Welcome to the Lounge! The Chap has been written about here before, it's a recommended site (at least by me!). I think you have the main details of the difference between the two hat styles correct. The only thing that I would add is; whereas the fedora usually has a fairly tall ribbon (usually grosgrain) the trilby has a narrow band (usually soft leather). I'm not an expert and would defer to a more knowledgeable member of the club. I hope that this has helped. Best regards, Sefton

P.S. I like your avatar. I'm not familiar with that particular painting...is it a portrait of Harry Truman or LBJ? ;)

In some ways, trilby/fedora interchangeable...

In general, the British trilby has more taper in the crown, and tends toward narrower brims. However, there are a number of hats by Lock, Dunn & Co., Christy's, Herbert Johnson, English Stetson, etc., that fit the appearance/definition of 'fedora.' If you do an auction search for 'trilby,' you'll find a number of fedoras.
