Thanks everyone for the comments on the Star hat. When I saw this design and also the basketweave material, I knew this would be a good combination.

I have to share this one. Got it for a song and didn't realize it was really quite old - probably 30's or 40's judging by the detail. I'm pretty sure it's an old fishing cap. Deadstock for sure, this thing was never worn. The color is amazing. And though I couldn't stop laughing when I first donned it, I've become fond of it. My wife says that against all odds it actually suits me. It's the 'odd' part that worries me.

In person it's a hilarious optical illusion. You can be looking at me front-on and never suspect a thing - then as my head turns the visor just doesn't stop.

Anybody else have one of these?

The very long peak and the shape of the cap reminds me of the WW2 British Army mountain troops cap. The colour is also similar. However, they had ear flaps that folded down. Might be something similar.

I'm with you, Stuffsmith, it looks like an old fishing cap. The little strap detail on front is something I've seen on hunting and outdoors caps, and I still see new fishing caps from time to time with that giant bill. Great for keeping the sun out of your face when you're on the water, but hell on the tops of your ears.

Ha! Thanks, guys. Lest you think it's extreme for me to wear this, keep firmly in mind that it's not as bad as it gets - I could always opt for one with built-in, fold down sunnies!

I used to work in a Bait & tackle shop as a kid & remember we had some old caps like these used for salt water fly fishing..
I still have one somewhere I used to flip the brim up for fun....

A nice oatmealy herringbone - a deadstock 1930's cap. Great volume on this one. Just about the first light-colored cap I own.
