I feel the same. Also, the leather might get stuck on your forehead but that keeps your cap from moving around, and on a windy day your cap won't fly off.

You're absolutely right, Ed and Johnny, I love leather and it performs crucially on a cap. But a bald head doesn't just stick on the forehead, it sticks all the way around – it's a very strange feeling. Unless it's absolutely to the millimeter correct in size, it becomes uncomfortable.

That's why I've come up with backing my ribbon, at the base only, with a woven thick undyed cotton strap, almost a belting. Keeps the breathability, doesn't distort the ribbon and offers a decent alternative for structural support. I'll post some pix at some stage.

Don't get me wrong, I love my caps with leather and wear them all the time. But as we heat up in the first few days of our Sydney summer, I love that I have a cooler alternative that works well for me.

You correct for this complaint by using a length of French canvas around the rim where the sweatband would be (check out the latest one in Simond's cap thread - I sent him some French canvas to use). Place the canvas between the wool and the liner, and the canvas is rigid enough to provide shape for the cap. This is how the vast majority of British caps were made, and their shape has never been an issue.

I also prefer a front leather panel only.

One of the reasons I like the leather is it gives the cap structure. Ribbon gives a looser fit and doesn't support the form on the cap.

One of my favorite plaid caps. 1920's deadstock, with a punch-in-the-eye orange liner.

PS. The French Cap is mine now but I guess I must wait a little bit, some problems with the shipping!

I got a new cap from Lawrence & Foster in Yorkshire. I ordered from their website a little more than two weeks ago, and it just arrived here in Texas today. I am very pleased.

The sewing is very nicely done, and the fabric is excellent.. The swatches on the website were tiny, but the color is just what I hoped it would be. The colors of the cloth are accurate in the photos, even though in getting them correct, it made my skin appear redder than it actually is.

It is tagged a 7 5/8 but that is in British sizing, which is a 7 3/4 in American sizing. It almost makes my noggin seem like it a reasonable size.

The price was reasonable, although the shipping from England upped the price a bit.
