The Bowler or Derby Hat

AETHA Clergy Hat

I guess I will post this one here to since it has some Bowler characteristics.

This is probably some type of clerical hat (size 57.5cm). I couldn't find anything on AETHA or C. & H. Co. and appears the store that sold it A. Spanke of Münster didn't survive WWII. It could have been custom made (modified?) and has elements of a Top Hat and Bowler. The felt finish, liner, rope and sweatband (hand stiched) are of very high quality. The under brim is fabric lined but not sure of the material. Any ideas on the age? It came with the original box and is in near mint condition.

That is such a neat hat, very unique!

I'm guessing 1910s to 1930s. If it was American, I would say it was 1920s, probably mid- to late-1920s. But it's not, and I don't know how European details compare era-wise to American.

...

Check for "Capello Romano". There is plenty of UFO´s on the web :)

I think this one is a bit different because it has conventional hat style elements (Bowler and Top hats).

Awesome thread!

I`ve always loved the bowler/derby hat(ever since my first viewing of "A Clockwork Orange")and secretly longed to wear one.I am not sure I could 'pull it off' but I may just say 'wtf' in 2010. Great pics, yall!

Derby sales tapered off to nearly nothing during the Depression, but that didn't stop Hat Corporation of America from trying to jump-start sales with a new Derby trend. Probably not as successful as the 1959 Derby revival.

Just recently acquired this Knox Twenty. My first Derby and I love this with a dark suit. Oiled silk liner so I'm guessing 40's.

Dulcis Bowler

Here is a new arrival. A Bowler by Dulcis. Would be interesting to find out more on this maker. The quality is outstanding and it feels quite old - something before 1920ies. The last medal quoted in the liner print was won by the company in 1894. Maybe, someone has gon a younger specimen with another later dated medal. Would be helpful for the dating.

Just found some reference of the union lable of 1891:

Nothing to limit down the making date of the Bowler. The lables do exist into the 20c.

G. M. Hutfabrik Bowler + Box

I am not aware of the hat company (G. M. Hutfabrik) that made it. I have to believe it is early 1900s (1910 to early 20s?) and of the highest quality. I will have to do some investigating and see if I can turn anything up.
