The lab's scale has it coming in at a whopping 51 grams! :D I've been looking for this one for at least seven years! CHUFFED!

Borsalino Alessandria Grand Prix

I posted this in the New Hats thread but didn't post it here until today. The hat had a bunch of small spots on it when I got it but I was able to dab them off with a damp cloth. The liner is a bit worn but short of that it's in excellent condition. The Borsalino tag that normally lists the color, model and size appears to have been ripped off although you can still see the aqua green border and some numbers. Perhaps one of my favorite Borsalino hats now. I think it is about the only 7 3/8 hat I can actually wear as it fits between a 7 1/4 and 7 3/8. It was sold at Maurice L. Rothschild & Co. which was a well know department store. I know Rothchild had stores in Chicago and Minneapolis and perhaps other cities as well.

2 5/8" brim with bound edge
5" crown as shown with a 1 7/8" grosgrain ribbon and wind trolley

Blue Velour Borsalino G. & Fuo Alessandria Grad Prix

Blue velour Boraslino G. & Fuo sold in Trieste, Italy (store name is on the sweatband). First white leather sweatband I've owned. Could use some help dating this one.

Nice finds as usual for you David. I wonder if the ribbon or brim binding (my guess) was replaced at some point on the Rothschild sold one which might explain the factory tag being peeled off?

The blue velour is a terrific hat and a keeper I'd say.

Thanks Steve.

This is the fourth Borsalinos I've purchased in these little boxes. All were unworn. Seems odd. I wonder if they were bought as gifts?

Alan, I think you are on target regarding the gift angle. I seem to recall Robert (RLK) having some info (Italian shop catalog) that pointed in that direction. I also wonder about the Otter content. I have TONAK from about the same time period that is marked Lutra which is European Otter.
