I have two thin ribbon Alessandria style Borsos, this one, and one from shortly before the factory move in the early 1980s. Either might be made to look like a modern day hat from a distance. You couldn't take the modern Alessandria (or the 1970s hat) and make the felt look like this. Not saying that this look is the paradigm... just that I really like it.

Yep Alan, that felt looks as if it would go anywhere you wanted and stay with no wetting or steaming. Now there is a fellow lounger---Job, I believe, who recently purchased a modern Alessandria. He did say that the felt was so pliable that he didn't need to steam or wet it. I'm at a real crossroads here.

I wasn't into thin ribbons either until recently. Hats like Alan's and Michael's will make a believer out of you though!

My favorite thin ribbon Borsalino has incredible felt (almost velour) and a felted ribbon!

I just noticed that you're in Dallas... Peter Brothers in Forth Worth sell Alessandrias. Why not stop down there, see what they have, and how you like it? That's the best way to do it, and all it costs you is gas money.

Nice lid mike, looks like a keeper!
I just wanted to add to the newby trying to figure out if he should buy the newer Borsalino or go vintage. Please stop over analyzing and just buy a damn hat. Youll never know how sweet a 1940 ish hat is until you actual own one and conversely the same is true about a newer one, although I am definitely a fan of vintage and I am slightly biased towards them.
So please just buy a hat and know now your life will never be as sane as it once was before you entered the fedora lounge world of hatophiles!

Thanks Tom---I was unaware of that hat shop. Will definitely plan a trip there. In the meantime my youngest son and I headed to the Hatco Outlet store in Garland, which is less than ten minutes away from our house. He loves derbies and they had ONE (!!!) Stetson Derby (Sovereign Fur Felt) that fits him perfectly. So I bought that for him and couldn't
resist getting a new Stratoliner for myself:

This is a temporary fix until I find the right thin-ribbon hat, be it a new or vintage Borsalino, Stetson OR, Srat, or whatever!

Nothing wrong with that Stratoliner! Just remember when you snap the brim, you want to do it ear to ear, just just a little in front.

Amazing group of Borsalinos, Vic! I like the one at the very top, far right (white looking one. If you ever decide to sell it...:D)
