Here’s an odd hat. I’ve looked around and find others marked Mimosa, but they look a bit different. Anyone have any info to share?

This doesn’t look old enough to be the original incarnation of G. B. Borsalino Fu Lazzaro, was this from when the “other” Borsalino rerelease the name?

Nice one Brent! In my understanding the newest FU Lazzaro can date up to '84 as I've learned recently. The experts here will tell more.

Btw is that a 7/8 or 1/8? In any case if the price is correct buy it

Thanks, Panos. If I understand right, they were two separate companies from different branches of the same family. FU Lazzaro was taken over, but Borsalino brought the name back for marketing purposes.

The thing is, the seller insists it’s a size 7 7/8! The label makes me think size 7. I’m not sure why it has a fraction inked in. There aren’t any store markings, but since the label is in English I don’t think there’s much of a chance the size is 7 Punti. There are other Borsalinos labeled “Mimosa” in this thread, but they are very different hats.

I saw that one. If I recall correctly it was a Canadian listing, wasn't it? I agree that it's not the original GB Borsalino. I think it was Canadian made, or finished to be precise. In 1959 Borsalino licensed a Canadian hatmaker to finish hats or hoods for the north-American market. The name isn't given, but Biltmore comes to mind. I think Borsalino used the Borsalino fu Lazzaro brand for that license. Interesting is that it's also named Borsalino di Lazzaro.
Here is a hat that was made under that license. The liner looks the same.

So likely the one you spotted is a Canadian GB Borsalino as well. The "mimosa" refers to a finish as far as I know. Finishes, qualities, felts and models were all used on the sweatband, probably depending on the preference of the retailer. The finishes we've seen are:
serikon
diamante
angora
pesca
imperiale
silchi
mimosa
krystal
peluche
castoro,
with the "castoro" also being a felt of course. Looks like the Mimosa is some sort of suede finish.

Borsalino Amiata. Size 57 with the bound brim at a good 5cm and the crown 10,5cm a the center dent. Some oddities on this early to mid sixties hat. The sweatband is missing the "antica casa" logo and the liner doesn't have a quality designation. The felt is also somewhat stiffer than usual with Borsalino. Might be this one was made for them by another factory.

The liner is a bit different from yours as this hat is just marked “(Italy).” The sweatband also states “Made in Italy by” on top of the Original House logo. There could be other markings that the seller didn’t provide.

The differences are there alright, so maybe not a Canadian made one. Odd though that they combined a GB Borsalino liner with a normal Borsalino sweatband. It's a bit of a puzzler this one. It's the label that places it outside of Italy to me. There are later Borsalinos with written sizes, but I haven't seen one with a correction like this. And it is quite a big difference. It's always possible of course, but I think it's a slim chance.

I am new to the forums, and have posted this in the general forum but was encouraged to post here. I found this Borsalino Fedora in a vintage shop in Amery Wisconsin. I have done some basic research on this Borsalino hat and have an understanding that the Maurice Rothchild stamp on the inside of the hat refers to a department store in Chicago Illinois that closed in 1955. I have gotten some feedback from the previous post , in that it is indeed an old hat. I have included a few more pictures to find out more. ?
I am very happy with the hat, it is in great shape and i got it for 65 bucks.

I'm not really a hat collector , but i will say i have been looking for a long time for something that works, and to stumble on this is really exciting !
I do collect other things - vinyl mostly - so i can feel the collecting vibe strike me for hats !
And by the way.............. I informed my gal about the info i got earlier and she informed me that she was the one that saw it first................so there is that.....!

My Marque Grande Luxe (MGL) arrived. It’s an absolutely fantastic hat, but it does not have the large dimensions that I personally prefer. The overwelt brim is incredible and almost looks and feels felted. Even though it’s not my normal preferred proportions, I’d gladly keep it if it was my size. 4 1/2 inch open crown and 2 inch wide brim. Pristine condition all the way around. Outside/natural light show the true color. This is sadly going straight into our classifieds.

The Coffin Box - Part Deux

And now for the second of two rollable Borsalino hats to arrive together

Borsalino Antica Casa rollable in a beautiful deep emerald green

The size is 4 1/2 approx 7 in US size

The felt on this hat has completely different properties than the white one. It has a velvety or velour texture and holds its shape much better it is a bit more dense and somewhat more stiff. Indicated on the grosgrain sweat is Qualita Superiore

The small bow on this hat sits on the right side indicating it may have been intended as a woman’s hat however it is somewhat masculine in its lines.

The grosgrain sweat band as with both of these hats allows it to be malleable and rollable. This hat creases into a fairly decent shape by hand... but would definitely benefit from steam and blocking.

I really am very happy with both of these hats

Alan had estimate manufacturing date maybe around mid 1960s.

Though these type of hats were intended to only stay in their coffin boxes for shipment home then reblocked to perfection. Being that these two hats would not be daily wear style of hats for me, I think I will keep them in their rolled states as very cool examples of this type of hat and coffin box. And take them out on occasion to use as a travel hat.

This one though may have to make an appearance for St Patrick's day!

My mystery Borsalino arrived. It’s not what I was expecting. The size is indeed 7 7/8...which in Borsalino sizing means it fits my 7 5/8 long oval head perfectly. The open crown is a huge 6 1/2 inches and the bound brim (before the curl) is 3 1/8 inches. I love the soft velour felt.
