I just picked this one up off the bay and thought it might make for a good beater. Moth nibbles, some tracks under the brim, looks like the wind strap had been cut, possible soiling, but the color and the condition of the leather caught my eye. Sure enough, it arrived as a total beater, but after a little tune up, it sure cleaned up nicely! I've never creased a diamond before but the thing I did seems to work well for this one. I love the color, it's this kind of a stone greyish brownish greenish color that looks great with most of the stuff I wear. Inside it says Palladio Ta/Ludora and there's what looks like a $20 tag. Seems serendipitous that I won it with just a $20 bid! The nibbles actually give it some nice character, it's got me wonderin', is it even a beater anymore? Lol

Great catch and nice diamond. Doesn't look like a beater to me. A unique looking Borsalino, too. Congrats.

Thanks very much for your enjoyment and feedback on the Borsalino misto from yesterday. I have another... this in the stately Gorasgu style, in a heather color oddly named after the dogfish (I think). Not sure if wild, or cooked. A little more recent than the hat posted yesterday, made for the American market following WWII.

Agreed, but I don’t think that hat has ever been near a mine. Pretty sure they float down from Heaven and light gently on Alan’s head.

Absolutely right, Bob. Oh to have Alan's hats and be able to take excellent photos like he can.

Now I am going to dream about a gentle snowfall of hats. I have been a little fussy about condition when shopping on eBay and have been fortunate to find clean hats of interest. It helps to wear a wee size, of course.

Steve, iPhones keep getting better and the new 11 pro is a pretty remarkable little camera.

How beautiful is that? Very! We might be spoiled collectors who kind of take this level of craftmanship for granted, but Borsalinos of this kind are something very special. Thanks for posting this, Alan.

It might have some character, but I think it's anything but a beater!

Finally got my first Borsalino in the mail last night from France. Bought it off Etsy for $40 shipped. They shipped it flattened out in an envelope, REALLY !?

After a lot of work last night it looked pretty good this morning after drying open crown over night.

Brushed it some more and steamed in a bash today. Felt is amazing and sweat is pretty good.

From reading back through this thread I’m thinking late 50’s to mid 60’s ? From the tag I assume the color is Amiata and the ribbon is Nizza, though I’m not sure what that means. It is a medium dark gray and the ribbon us a green - gray. Nice looking I think.

It has the Export Quality sticker also, are there any differences in quality for Export versions ?

Super Borsalino H, at a great price, too. Can't believe they sent it in that Jiffy-bag. You've done a great job resurrecting it.

The colour Amiata, as far as I remember, is named after Mount Amiata in Tuscany. Hence the grey. Nizza is Italian for nice. And that ribbon looks very nice on that grey felt.

All Borsalinos back in the day were top quality, so I don't believe there's much if any difference in export quality.

Congrats on the buy. It may be your first, I'm sure it won't be your last [emoji6]

Thanks Steve, I appreciate the info. Do you think I’m about right on my age estimate ? It does have the plastic liner tip covering and had a wind trolly that was too mangled to save. Here’s a pick after all the cleaning and reshaping when it was still damp.

You're welcome, my friend. I think your estimate is in the ball park. The onion liner tip covering suggests so. More 60s perhaps than 50s. Any label under the sweat band would help date it more accurately.

Very nice hat, Tim and great recovery. Amiata was a very popular colour; we've seen a lot of those. No difference in the quality of the export versions. It seems the various qualities of Borsalinos have more to do with the weight of the felt. That is: "extra extra superiore" is a lighter weight than just "superiore". Steve is spot on with his early to mid-sixties assessment. It could be earlier if the other side of the label is cerrated as well. If it is straight, like the left side, it's early to mid-sixties.

Great, I was hoping it was at least that old. I’ve been wearing it around the house today to break it in to my head, and I believe it will become one of my favorites. Very nice felt and very comfortable as well.

Not bad for my first one I guess.

Thanks for the input !

Second hat with a "special" felt
BBrughiera 1.jpg

Borsalino Qualità Superiore size 6 or 59 cm. or 7 3/8 US
BBrughiera 2.jpg

One of the strangest Borsalino in my collection, usually these are felts that the Cappellificio Cervo produced
BBrughiera 5.jpg

Felt is a dark green with straw-colored inserts, but it is not marked "misto" as some might suppose
BBrughiera etichetta carta.jpg
The color is "Brughiera" and the ribbon "Ombù". I have to be honest the first time I see a similar denomination of the ribbon and I think another time I saw a hat with this kind of green (Brughiera)
BBrughiera interno.jpg
It was sold in Torino, around forty years ago
BBrughiera 4.jpg

The felt is very consistent and despite appearances it firmly maintains the shape
BBrughiera 6.jpg

The dimensions are as follows: brim at 5.5 over welted cm. the open crown is at 13 cm. and the ribbon is 3 cm.
Borsalino of the "bizarre" series
