I always hated the fact that George refused to use a German accent - the only one in the film who didn't. But, on the other hand, I always loved that marching drum scene with Countess Kaeti von Klugermann in which Bruno seduces her with a drum stick. Made me practice my drums even harder - what an inspiration!
I don't know. I rather think that Peppard's non-use of a German accent worked for his character. It emphasized his being a lower-class counter-jumper making his way among the Junkers.
