I saw it as a kid (perhaps in the theater, I dont remember) and didnt remember the title until I got into high school, then this girl told it to me as I was describing the movie.

"You mean The Dark Crystal?"

It was like a weight was lifted from me
I went out and rented the VHS (yeah! You heard me!) and watched it that night.
Ah...

The Cooler....

AMAZINGLY well made film; you literally can't take your eyes off it...not that you'd want to....or you'll miss some little detail. Definitely one of those where the second--and subsequent--viewings are even better than the first. You know you're in for a ride from the first shots...which evoke the psychedelic journey down the wormhole in 2001...but which turn out to be....a speeded-up aerial shot of Las Vegas from far away....and getting closer all the time. Manages to make Las Vegas a metaphor for America; The Garden of Eden; Hell; and a bunch of other things...without letting that get in the way, parading around with a sign in front of the action saying DEEP MESSAGE....

Tale of a "cooler"--who has the power to take luck away from people--employed by an old-school mobster who has the last old-school casino on the strip in Vegas...many changes in the wind. Doesn't shy away from, and also doesn't feel it has to answer, the question of the mystical power that is the engine of the story. Great acting from all concerned, some well known--Wm H. Macy; Alec Baldwin--and some not, including the folks that are almost walk-ons, like the casino owner's strong-arm men. One of those films which manage to show complexity in ALL it's characters, refuses to make cardboard cutouts of ANY of them....and leaves you understanding the motivations of all of 'em...however ugly.

Highest recommendation! I had no idea it existed until it drifted across IFC or Sundance a few months ago....

I tell people about The Dark Crystal, and it seems no one's ever heard of it. It's not academy award material, but intriguing, original and creative, none the less.

Everyone I know has seen that film! Maybe because it came out as a kids' film in the 80s and most of my friends were kids in the 80s. I hired that film so many times as a little kid.

The Commitments got a lot of press and fans, but was overshadowed by the incredibly well written/acted follow up, The Snapper!

But from a golden era point of view, there are so many brilliant films that in my opinion, get nowhere enough praise. I'm going to think about this a bit before I make my list

Dogville - a Lars von Trier movie starring Nicole Kidman

The story is interesting, but what's really amazing about this one is the near total lack of a set. Trier makes no attempt to hide the fact that this is a sound stage & uses only portions of items to indicate setting/props - certain locations are indicated by tape markings and the name of the location written on the ground. Incredibly, you lose sight of this as your mind fills in the details. Call it minimalism or deconstructionism, but I just call it fantastic.

Oh, and Lauren Bacall is in it, which sort of makes it vintage.

I especially liked Equilibrium of those two, it's from before Christian Bale was that much of a hot shot. An excellent movie, maybe not quality A, but a decent story and good actors.

None of my friends have seen the 1955 film Night of the Hunter! I don't know if it might be more famous in the US, but to me, it seems quite unknown. It should be a classic! One of the best movies I've seen.

There is the most amazing little Czech movie called Valerie and Her Week of Wonders that not a soul knows about. I would love to hear it if some of you have seen it.

Oh yes, that's a really good one! But don't see the follow-up Manderlay, it's awfully boring.

I don't know how famous he is in the US, probably not at all, so allow me to recommend the Yugoslavian director Emir Kusturica. He has made one American movie with Johnny Depp, Arizona Dream. I recommend:

"The Ninth Configuration" by William Peter Blatty.
A superb psycho-drama with an excellent ending. Anyone else seen it?

I have not seen it but will check it out because you've reminded me of Exorcist III/Legion with George C. Scott. This was a well done thriller.
I've read a couple of Blatty's books and recall him being a good writer too.

starring Freddie Finlay, If ever I talk about this film, no one seems to have seen or heard about it, yet I have seen it twice.

Abel Gance's Napoleon (1927). I saw this during its theatrical reissue in 1983 and have been raving about it ever since, but rights issues have kept it off DVD in most of the world, so it's very hard to see nowadays.

Probably the greatest film epic ever made, and without a doubt the most awe-inspiring experience I've ever had in a theatre. It's probably just as well that it hasn't been given the DVD treatment, because it really is something you have to see on the big screen to catch the full sweep.

(Yeah, I know this is films that "no one" has ever seen, but me and Kevin Brownlow don't count as anyone, really..)
