The 16th-century Tridentine Mass — the name of the old Latin Mass — was swept away by the so-called New Mass that followed the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council.

To celebrate the old Latin Mass now, a priest must obtain permission from the local bishop.

Pope Benedict XVI has decided to loosen restrictions on use of the old Latin Mass, a Vatican official said Wednesday, a major concession to ultraconservatives who split with the Vatican to protest reforms.

This story is a tempest in a teapot. One of those "move along folks nothing to see here" kind of stories. [huh]

Regards,

J

Within the Roman Catholic Church, the Tridentine Mass is hardly a mere
"tempest in a teapot." Nor is the underlying subject of this thread,
the Mass and the Sacrifice of Calvary inconsequential.

That was not the intention of my post. It was more in the sense that Latin Masses have been said around here since, well they never stopped being said. The article is a little behind time for the area I am in. If you want to find a mass being said in latin they are there. You just have to look. Making a big deal news article about it just seem redundant to me.
Stick to the article and not the underlying stuff or this won't last long.

J

Your earlier remark elicited my comment. I understand that the
Tridentine Mass is said throughout the United States and the world;
however, within the Church this form remains restricted by progressive
theologians. The article itself is a valid thread, and your dismissive post
failed to fully explain your position. If any misunderstanding resulted
such is regrettable, though the topic is current; despite your belief that
it is not, and the sweeping dismiss of your post failed to provide a
parameter beyond which I would not have otherwise gone. My reply
traversed this and gave my own opinion, which included the religious
connotation that I consider germane to topic.

Well the whole deal is that PopeBenedict is putting it into writing to make it easier to perform a LatinMass.

I dont understand what you mean by the underlying stuff.

I was there ringing bells during mass as an alter boy

I don't know where this tread is going. I started out with a factual news item about the Latin Mass. Then we seem to have gotten on some tangent about an avitar. Now we are screaming about nothing.

I started my young christian/Catholic life with the Roman Latin Mass.
Even as an Altar Boy, I knew the rote language of the Mass. Then, in the mid 60's, we went with the "English Language" mass, and then women stopped wearing veils and hats, and the Altar Rail disappeared, and then they moved the Altar to have the Priest face the congregation, and not the tabernacle.

Many things have changed. I remember going to Berkeley, to Newman Hall, where novelties like drinking wine, and giving the sign of peace were new.

Wow how things have changed. Maybe there is some trend to go back to the Retro days?

This thread has been edited some from how it was going last night. Posters should be aware that at the Lounge we strictly enforce Godwin's Law with regard to reductio ad Hitlerum.
• If someone brings up Nazis in general conversation when it wasn't necessary or germane without it necessarily being an insult, it's probably about time for the thread to end.
 • If someone brings up Nazis in general conversation when it was vaguely related but is basically being used as an insult, the speaker can be considered to be flaming and not debating.
 • If someone brings up Nazis in any conversation that has been going on too long for one of the parties, it can be used as a fair excuse to end the thread and declare victory for the other side.
Carry on.

Andy, I was an altar boy & rang the bells too.
But not for very long.
And not til well after the LatinMass was gone.
I believe its been said that by picking the name Benedict, the Pope has sent a message that he intends to move conservatively.
So yes I think we have a retro pope!

I beleive the current mass is undergoing changes as well.

For anyone who went to Catholic School in the `60s, check out the movie

Well not a comment on the mass from me so much as on the promotion of Latin. I like the language but rarely hear it spoken. I think it would have made a nice universal language - so much more fluid than Esperanto :)

Oh My. I came to this thread late, but I hope that I come with decent input. I was raised in the Catholic faith as it was changing, and saw, and was effected by Vatican II. My first holy communion was held in the basement of St. Bernadette's in 1967 at a time when Catholics were angry and leaving the church in droves.

It may be important to this conversation to distinguish between the New Mass said in latin and the pre-Vatican II mass said in latin.

Until a year ago, I was going to latin mass (old) every Sunday and Holy Day in a skirt (nun-rule approved length), hat and gloves. I found them after a brief tour of RC Churches in my area. When I told my friends what happened on Sundays in these places, the most common response was "Are you sure it was a Church? A CatholicChurch???!!

Latin masses are few and far between. But, I must say better. Much better.

PS> I don't play guitar, but I still don't understand how you make it sound so BAD.

PPS Has anyone read "Windswept House"?
