The straw boater is at the top of my list of things I would never wear. I would feel like a public school ******* of a certain type (think of the famous 1970s photo of Tony Blair wearing a boater). More likely it will be white shoes, grey flannels, cravat and a soft collared linen shirt. The stiff collar look doesn't work for me.
Haha I think that's a fair point. I guess what I meant was its nice enough to dress up or dress down. I quite like stiff collars, although they can be a killer in summer. The tall double-round I got from Darcy is more comfy than the vintage ones I have.

I don't think I could ever pull off white shoes though...

Dinerman, I have a very similar silk jacket. It even has the same one button cuff on an open slit. but not as cutaway at the front.

Seriously? White shoes with white trousers? I can't imagine that looking very good. The first things that cross my mind are hospitals and swimming pools.

Just look at any old pictures from the 30's and 40's white linen suits and white bucks were the norm for summertime to reflect the summer sun's rays.

white shoes with white / off white suits or trousers was a Summer staple for the first half of the 20th century. tons of historic photos out there if you want to do some research.

I'm not argueing the historical correctness. I'm argueing that it's not a look that I like. Historical correctness doesn't make it right or beautiful to my eyes. That last outfit would look better with tan shoes imo.

^Nice photo! It looks like the guy on the right is wearing something underneath his waistcoat. I wonder what that could be?

I spent some time recently looking at pictures of early film actors. Good fun, they are full of neat details.

Charles Ray. Great fabric on the left and a nice tape-links collar on the right!

Sussue Hayakawa. First two are from His Birthright (1918). Very oddly cut jacket; huge lapels and it seems to be rather short.
