I guess I won't be going to Teheran for my next custom suit:

Seriously, I'm glad that's over and they're OK.

Sad thing is, with the state of dress wear today, I know plenty of people who would see those suits and say they look pretty sharp. :eusa_doh:

I saw that picture when they were first released, and went, "yecht!"

and did anyone seriously expect them to have well fitted suits?

They went and got the nearest size, put it on them...and thats it....healthy and clothed....not custom tailored.

Not to mention the cultural differences in how things are percieved as looking....ie suits in more eastern countries are just styled differently then in western countries.

There is a whole wide world out there, and we keep applying our style rules to places where they simply don't apply.

That's right. These suits were given to them after they were let out of their cells. I doubt they even took their measurements. We shouldn't be surprised at the poor quality or expect the Iranians to have given them anything different.

Sorry, but your observation simply doesn't apply here. Those Brits, and their Iranian captors, all the way up to Ahmadinejad himself, wear Western-styled suits. They're not wearing ethic clothing or even the Iranian equivalent of a Texas-styled western suit with the yoke and different pockets and such. It's just a plain business suit that is the same in Japan, Iran, Germany, and the US. Except for the vests, I'd guess I could pick up practically the same thing those sailors are wearing at my nearest Men's wearhouse. True, none of the Iranians wear neckties for some reason (probably having to do with not completely giving in to Western cultural imperialism), but their suits are standard-issue.

It's just wrong to say that you can't make quality or style critiques because of the cultural differences. They're wearing things that are from our cultural sphere, and as such it's perfectly legitimate to say that they're badly made suits.

Whether or not one would want to criticize them on other grounds (like the ones above) is a different matter.

well except that perhaps they didn't give them suits of the 'upper levels of businessmen......

I haven't seen pictures of 'random business people that don't deal with the western world' lately to see what they are wearing.....

but then again....I don't know suits...so point conceded that perhaps they are just poorly fitting but standard otherwise suits.
