But I feel bad for those little kids who make the rugs instead of going to school.

The antique Persian rugs are magnificent, especially the silk ones.

Well I still think these are family businesses. In a lot of countries I visit, formal schooling is forsaken if the children are to enter the trades of their fathers. At one time it was somewhat like that in Europe and even to a large extent in the US until industrialization. I'm not current on the rug scene in Isfahan, but hopefully it hasn't morphed into large textile mills exploiting child labor. I do know the rug business in Turkmenistan is still pretty much a family business scenario as I have described above.

Cheers,

Well, I guess I should read the article next time before posting a reply. I had no idea these were the British captives being released wearing suits. What would have been wrong with releasing them in their uniforms they were captured in?[huh]

Neckties were seized on by the Islamic Revolution of Khomenei as a symbol of western imperialism. They were referred to as "Shah's donkey tails". Since then, they have all but been officially banned from being worn. The Komite, (informal religious police), would make their displeasure known toward neckties in much the same way they would towards a woman they considered immodestly dressed. Sartorial police are not a good thing. To wear one today in Iran is a political statement.

most interesting, of course, is how they dressed the female sailor.

Take one (presumably) fit member of the armed forces and make her look frumpy. A masterpiece of ensemble design! Humiliation at its greatest. The horizontal stripes on the shirt are perfect. The propaganda ministry must have worked overtime to get that outfit to its least-flattering "best".

Rooster asked why the sailors and marines were not returned in their uniforms and Baron Kurtz answered it. Humiliation. Same with all that bonhomie and giftbags at the end. It also underlined the implication that they could have been disappeared and nothing would have been done.

Yep. Reportedly, pistachios, small ceramics, books on morality and Shia Islam, traditional Persian sweetmeats, usw.
